You can't call it overrated if you've only seen the first 30 minutes... heh. It's a good movie.

I gave it a go for 30 minutes and didn't get into it at all. I'm not talking about watching 2 minutes of it on TV or something and basing my opinion on that. I honestly tried to give it a chance, but it failed to live up to my expectations based on the good press it's gotten.

Hence, my opinion that it was overrated. :p

A few that stand out of recent:
Kill Bill (both, vol 1 especially) - so much hype, no where near as good as other tarintino films

Royal Tenenbaums - as others have said, where was the funny?

Girl with the Perl Earrings - I tried so hard to stay awake...

Dogma - Not enough witty dialogues (like his 3 before it), too much toilet humor

I know not all of those carried national hype, but amongst my friends they were all raved about for weeks and turned out to be big let downs

Jerry Maguire, I can't believe anyone won an Oscar from that crapfest. I almost felt like puking every time Tom Cruise screamed, "Show me the money"

What titles were posted just to be funny?

Also, I agree with you on Requiem.

yesterday they showed Jurassic Park on AMC. Saw it in the 90s, of course.

Very 'Spielbergisch', but it dawned on me what a stupid movie it actually is.

ANd this movie generated a lot of hype about dinosaurs in the 90s...i wonder why...the movie is bad :)

Donnie Darko - this movie just flat out sucked, no clue on the hype

Bubba HoTep - again, this movie was just ridiculous and I dont see how that movie was even funded.

ill post more if i can think of them.

EDIT1:
Signs - if it was advertised as a religious movie instead of a thriller, maybe it wouldnt have been.

Unbreakable - this movie just speaks for itself ...

these are just BAD movies...we are talking about 'overrated' movies, movies which were hyped a lot but basically sucked :)

I agree. The book is excellent, but the movie was horribly overrated. I was so disappointed when I saw it in the theater.

I also thought "A Beautiful Mind" was pretty terrible. It didn't do a good job showing the horrors of schizophrenia. If any of you wan't to see some great movies about mental illness rent "Shine" or Taxi Driver"

Another film I thought that fell short was "American Beauty". It wasn't as great as people made it out to be.
