I don't know... it was a good movie, but it was a romantic comedy at its heart. The narration and side stories are in a lot of movies, like Fight Club and Memento.

Fight Club and Memento get my vote, though. The style of movie is pretty original and rarely seen, and they both deal with new subjects - multiple personalities and complete loss of short-term memory.

Anyone who thinks Fight Club is original owes it to themselves to track down the absolutley horrible movie Terrified. It is awful in its current state, but if it actually had a buget (along with good acting and writing) it would have been Fight Club in 1995.

Check it out, seriously. It's pretty weird how similar (though not totally similar) it is.

How can that (2001) be original when it was based off a novel?

The novel was being written at the same time the movie was being made. It was based off of a short story called "The Sentinel."

Oh I know. It must have been one of those movies where Robin Williams played a quirky character who taught us a valuable life lesson.

Sixty replies, and no one's said Brazil.

Shame. So my vote is for Brazil.

Some good choices, but the correct answer is one older than any of us, Utopia. :D

Edit,

Different genre, but Seven Samurai is way up there.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas..

but it was based on a book, so that may disqualify it.

Cube seemed pretty original. The Matrix was an original idea, so was Star Wars. The usual suspects was pretty original I thought.

It's not THE most original, but it's got to be up there:

Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein

The steps sequence and his idea of the montage was pretty incredible.
