Donnie Darko was very original; not "most original" but I have no idea what would get that award.

Check out City of Lost Children by the same director, That's a pretty damn original movie too. They're both beautiful movies.

Citizen Kane is the most original film of all time.

It paved the way for every film we see today.

wow ive never seen this but i just checked rotten tomatoes. pretty impressive. 100% and quoted as being the "greatest film ever made".

yeh but check it out for youself ive seen bits of it ,it involves a newspaper a lot of media people go for these types of film

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GO GET AN EDUCATION.

That deserves the title of most ignorant statement of the year. You've seen BITS of the movie and have the gall to say it's only critically acclaimed because it involves a newspaper? WTF?

And for the ignoramus who said "Star Wars" or "Matrix" -- I won't go into detail but I can tell you that plotlines and themes from both movies are an amalgamation of at least several dozen prior works. Far, far from original. That doesn't make them bad, though. :)

I hated it. A lot of other people hated it. But the Blair Witch Project was like no other movie before it.

The original "Planet of The Apes." I have that on DVD and it's one of the best movies ever made.

I suppose it depends on what's original: concept, direction, visual imagery, filmmaking techniques, etc.

For lack of a better answer, I'll go with Brazil.

The one that popped into my head when reading this question was "Memento," but "Citizen Kane" is a much better choice. I'm not an expert on this, but I know it set many film standards, and was original in its camera work and lighting at what not. It's been awhile since I've seen it though..

My top vote goes to A Clockwork Orange... followed by my fav movie, Fight Club, and rounding out with other favorites Memento and Usual Suspects.

for everyone who said "citizin kane," you're not considering a very crucial detail: citizen kane was made in 1941. yes, it was probably one of the best movies ever made, and certainly one of the most original for its time, but not too many movies had been made before that. the fact is, movies have been around for decades now, it's pretty damn hard to come up with a completely original idea because chances are something similar to it has already been done.

btw, waking life seems like a pretty original movie to me, but most likely it's been done before in another way.

You're not considering that because it was made so early on and is part of the foundation for filmmaking the way we know it today, it makes it one of the most original films.

How can that be original when it was based off a novel?

Actually, the screen play and book were written together ( the book was an attempt to fill in some of the holes Kubrick left in the movie). I would count it as an original.
