The generic stuff that comes in the 1 gallon buckets already freezer burned at Walmart, who knows what brand it is.

Breyers is nasty...it never tastes good, its way too expensive, and it always has a crap texture.

ugh, just had a cup of breyer's strawberry ice cream. the taste is so-so, but its just not creamy at all. screw the "all natural" tagline...this crap doesn't even come close to dreyer's offerings.
on second thought...the texture of dreyer's ice cream reminds me of ice cream that's been in the freezer for way too long.

Breyers is usually quite good. The reason you probably didn't like it is:
* The grocery store doesn't rotate its stock
* The grocery store has its freezers at the wrong temperature
* You drive around for an hour with it in your car before you take it home and put the half melted icecream back into your freezer to refreeze.
Given your last statement about the texture, I'm leaning toward the 3rd option here.

I will toss a theory out for why the breyers texture is off at times. Edys/dreyers, Blue Bunny, or other regional vendor supplied icecreams are shipped on trucks that run at a good -10F. Breyers and many store brands like kroger, ship through the regular frozen loads from the stores' wharehouses. These trucks usually only run in the 20F range, sometimes closer to 32F. Not keeping it at the right temps does bad things to the texture. I will never buy a kroger brand, I have seen way, way too many come in melted at a wharehouse level.

For store bought, Dreyers is at the top of my favorites list.
Breyers is better than MOST "house brands"
SOME made by local dairies is still better than Breyers IMO.
MOST Schwan's Ice Cream is better than any of the above, EXCEPT their Rocky Road...that one sux.
Dreyers Rocky Road is the best in that flavor ever...
