seeing as there is a stupid user thread everybody will get a kick out of this absolutely true one.
User calls and says she can't get into the oracle database. Ticket is escalated all over IT - from the helpdesk, to level 2, to applications, to databases, to network, etc.
It was determined there had to be a serious network problem going on that required my expertise with routing, switching and detailed packet trace analysis.
So I board a plane to chicago the next day to resolve this very serious network issue.
Immediately plug in sniffer, span the port on the switch and filter on her IP address. Ask her to try to open database. Hmm - not a response time issue as the replies are coming back within 100 ms. Not a bandwidth problem. TCP handshake completing normally, windows and flags look good.
Open full decode of resonse. And low and behold "Password Error"
you have got be f'in kidding me. I go over to her station and have her try again...sure enough she gets a "cannot connect to server" message. I have her click on the details button and it says "username or password incorrect"
I have her take f'in caps lock off.
I'm a hero.
I am not making this up. You should have seen the scathing e-mail I sent to the director of the apps and helpdesk.
Oh well, least she took me out for "blue martinis" later. mmmm...blue cheese olives.
-cliffs-
user can't get to database and takes 7 people a week to figure out it must be a "network problem"
I fly to chicago to do full paket analysis
user needs to turn off caps lock
I get tipsy on blue martinis
