For many years I was baffled by an expression I would hear people say - "watchcolumn".
As in "I ran into that guy we bought the car from a few years ago... the guy from Edgewood... you know, watchcolumn, uh, Bob."
I never saw it in print (and I read a lot!) so I figured it was some unfathomable local expression that didn't even make sense.
And then one day it hit me like a lightning bolt. They were saying "what do ya call him" but all slurred together. Duh!
When I was quite small, I understood the basic concept of radio - that there was a place somewhere where the broadcasts originated - but I also thought whenever they played music, the band was performing at the radio station. I hadn't quite grasped there was such a thing as recorded music.
