About 90% of what EA churns out? EA is getting better though, we aren't disapointed anymore though, because our expectations are gone...

There is no discussion to be had about this. The correct answer - the only answer - is Daikatana.

Definitely one of the most infamous, including the "gonna make you its bitch" hype. I understand why some mention E.T., but for myself, that era of gaming was so simplistic, I saw little to get excited about beyond missile command and space invaders type games. Though boxing on the 2600 had me a bit excited, until I actually played it at a friend's house. My reaction was "that's it?!?"

They need to make a Daikatana 2 ala Killzone 2

SMB2? What, are you kidding me? This is the 2nd best game in the series after SMB3. Great memories... right along w/ Ninja Gaiden.

My vote is a tie between Twilight Princess and Halo 2. Only b/c the hype surrounding these games was HUGE! And they didn't give me the same feeling as the originals did sadly...

I know many will disagree w/ me here... but Link as Wolf was just horrible gameplay. I turned it off an never finished the game shortly after that point.

There was apparently an N64 release of Daikatana, so at least it's appropriate to mention in the console gaming forum. :)

Fable and/or Black & White - generally Peter Molyneux projects. Both games I enjoy, but he has a tendency to oversell things with the vigor of an informercial pitch-guy.

Too Human is also up there. Assassin's Creed as well.

I think newer games have a disadvantage because the industry has gotten larger and the means of distributing hype are infinite. Back in the day all we really had were gaming magazines.

Donkey Kong 64 is another good one. Nintendo Power hyped that thing up with its mandatory RAM-upgrade packed in, and the game was a turd.

Halo 3. The most overhyped game in history. The single player game was laughably pathetic and short, and the multiplayer was a cesspool of kidz abusing the game's poor design, mechanics and gameplay. I, unfortunately, believed the hype and bought it. Literally twelve hours later, I traded it in towards something else.

Hey, at least I only lost like $10 on the deal, since GameStop was giving $35 for it and had a special going on! Still, what a pile...

Fable FTW.

Fable and KOTOR were games that had HUGE hype and both games demonstrated their development efforts to the community throughout their development lifetimes. Fable looked SO good "on paper" but was a steaming pile when I actually started playing it. I was so let down; I traded it in to EB and didn't care how much I received...I just wanted it gone. What a piece pf kiddie crap.

My friends and I were the same way with Fable 1. It was heralded as the best game ever! But, then it turned out to be the original "10-hour Special." We all traded it in the EB at the same time for like $35. Got get rid of it while the gettin' is good!

Interesting thread. IMO, it's kind of hard to argue against Daikatana. That game was an epic disappointment. The game is basically a punch line now, whereas most of the other games being mentioned (e.g. Assassin's Creed) are not.

For me personally, the most recent example of a disappointing game was STALKER. I know that won't be popular with some people here, but I hated that game. I heard how great it was supposed to be so I decided to try it out. Even ignoring all the bugs, it really felt like a half-assed FPS crossed with a half-assed RPG. Then end result was just lame. I don't know that I would call it most disappointing of all time though since I was never really hyped for it. I just picked up on a whim after launched due to good word of mouth.

I purchased STALKER through STEAM for $5. I'd be extremely angry if I had bought it at retail when it first came out. I actually like the game itself pretty well, but even with 6 patches, it still is an unholy BSOD making mofo.

Fallout 3, Oblivion, heck any Bethesda (or EA...here's looking at Battlefield 2) was a buggy mess, but at least the passage of time fixed most of the major issues. STALKER is still unplayable by anyone's standards.

In short, I'm most disappointed in STALKER because I like the gameplay a lot, but the game is too buggy to be playable.

Recently, I would have to KB:Nuts and Bolts. There was to much racing against the clock for me.

STARCRAFT 2. the expectation is equivalent of ---> taking god, roll him/her/it onto a dual layer DVD spun out of transparent aluminum. NO WAY THEY CAN MEET THIS, so this is already the biggest disappointment ever

hated pretty much every N64 game. don't know why, because I haven't had this problem on any other console, but N64 games gave me motion sickness.

I don't see how Halo 3 could be considered a disappointment as it was pretty much exactly what Halo fans wanted. If you had not figured out the "Halo formula" by the THIRD installment of the game, it's sort of your own fault that you were disappointed.

To echo what others have said, I'd have to say Assassin's Creed was one of the bigger disappointments. I'll even add that I'm going to be really skeptical of any Ubisoft titles in the future, as Far Cry 2 was pretty much the same way. AC and FC2 both looked great and had some terrific concepts, but they just weren't fun beyond about an hour of game play.

I think it's funny how many of the games mentioned in here I thought were simply great games.
I loved Fable, it wasn't as good as I'd hoped and was short, but I played through it 2 or 3 times and enjoyed it. I was actually more disappointed in Fable 2.

Oblivion is one of my all time favorite games and I used to play it constantly, but my PC has grown unstable for gaming recently.

I loved Twilight Princess though not as much as Ocarina which is my #2 game of all time.

Fallout 3 has been my favorite game of the past year or two.

My biggest disappointments however.

Halo. I hated Halo. I consider it the worst FPS I've played and I was an FPS addict for years.

Half-Life 2. I liked the game, but with how much hype I heard about it before I played it I was expecting the second coming of video games. Instead I got a game that I enjoyed slightly less than half as much as its predecessor. Hell, I even like Opposing Force and Blue Shift more... well, maybe not Blue Shift.

Final Fantasy 6. I admit, I played it after I played 7 and 8. Went back and played 6, couldn't even finsih it I was so bored with it. I went back and played FF4 at some point though and freaking loved it.

F.E.A.R. 2, Far Cry 2, GTA IV and Oblivion are the most recent ones I can think of but there are loads of disappointing games out there.

I had problems with it as well. I downloaded the demo and it always crashed to desktop or BSODed when the bathysphere first docks at the city. The first little bit played fine, oddly enough, even on my old GF 7600GS. On console though, it's a pretty decent shooter. I thought it was a tad overrated though. It reminded me a lot of the Jedi Knight games but with a horror twist.

Another disappointing game I think was The Force Unleashed. I went into it with high expectations of Euphoria and Molecular Matter and I feel they were vary underutilized considering the hype that went into them. The controls are sluggish too. Good story, good concept, and the game wasn't bad but I think it could have been a lot better than it was. Others recent disappointments were Prince of Persia and Echochrome. I don't know why the latter is so popular

I'll even add that I'm going to be really skeptical of any Ubisoft titles in the future
I think Ubisoft is becoming the next EA. In all fairness to them, EA has produced some really good games in the last few years despite the controversies over SecuROM, etc. The Sim games, Mirror's Edge, their sports games are all strong titles. Ubi though has turned out a lot of overhyped rubbish recently. Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, Haze. God how awful was Haze. I'm still perplexed as to why they couldn't even get it to run in HD. The next Il-2 game better be good. :p

An Atari 2600 game based on the movie E.T. Widely regarded as one of the worst games ever made.
Thus starting a trend for movie based games that continues to this day.
