Most countries have nationalistic pride - but what about America?

Hmm I'm with my bro on this, Americans always seemed more patriotic than pretty much anyone TBH. And there's a lot of things Americans ought to be proud of. But Americans also need to recognise their weaknesses and not become complacent, because that's leading you down a path of slothfulness and arrogance.

Patriotism and thinking Americans are unique is America's greatest weakness. Why can't socialized medicine work in the US? Because the US is different in some way that cannot be described! Why can marijuana be legal in Amsterdam without a problem but the whole world would collapse if it were legal in the US? It's because Americans are different2!@#@#$@#$!!! This seems to cause a lot of self-inflicted problems.

It's also painfully easy to take freedom away from Americans. Just say warrant-less wiretaps are to defend freedom and boom there goes freedom. Wasn't that easy? All you had to do is say it's in the name of freedom, and people will willingly give up their freedom. Penn & Teller mocked this idea when they got people to sign a petition to ban freedom of assembly within a certain distance of the capital building. The petition itself said it was in the name of defending liberty, which is the exact opposite of what it would mean.

The funniest is when Americans accuse each other of hating America. Bush hates America because he destroys the constitution. Obama hates America because he's a communist marxist nazi Nigerian from Kenya. Liberals hate America because they want to turn it into modern day Germany. Conservatives hate America because they want to turn it into Nazi Germany. It goes on and on.

Why do you hate America 😛

I think the OP may be confusing nationalism which cultural unity. The US has plenty of people who thing that America is the greatest, but don't stop to consider that it's the greatest to them because that's what they know.

Not all Americans are hostile to others when we visit other lands. I spent a fair amount of time apologizing for some of our assholes when I was last in Canada 😀

Seriously, the place I stayed at had a couple from Texas (which I sort of count as distinct from the US, but anyway). The woman said "Now you're Communist in Canada, right?"

How can you not feel that you want to be anything but her nationality at the time?

It was pretty damn funny though I almost shot coffee out my nose.

Americans used to have nationalistic pride.

However, it came to the attention of the corporations and Republicans that the public is more easily manipulated when they all hate each other.

So far the plan is working.

Americans have nationlistic pride... its called TV... take away that... and the french revolution would look like a church bakesale...

If we have one weakness.... it's our compassion for the less fortunate, like Austrailia, New Zealand, Canadia...

Yet another dumbass American who fails geography hard and for some reason thinks America gives handouts to other rich countries.

Uhh.. interesting country choices...lol

True about us having to much compassion for others countries however. Remember the tsunami? We were SHAMED into like quadrupling our aid money by the world after bush offered a few million... which honestly is enough money IMO...

Now look at haiti... OH MY GAWD! Stop sending and donating money to haiti you ignorant bastards!!!!! Its not going anywhere but into the pockets of skumbags in power down there.. and to grease the wheels of the corporate movement to build hotels and luxury homes while kicking out the citizens...

Stop donating money to people who already get millions of our tax dollars every time an earthquake hits.. or some stupid american gets kidnapped backpacking in Iran...(honestly if they wanna backpack in a country which hates americans they deserve what they get, PERIOD) Your money is doing nothing but sitting in an acount for 5 years.. earning interest which is skimmed off the top... then 20% of it is actually given to the people who need it.. while the rest is pocketed...

I think the richest country in the world can afford to be benevolent with a tiny, insignificant portion of its GDP.

I have an English friend who thinks Kiwis are too nationalistic/proud 😀

I dunno, last time I was at the airport picking someone up, a flight from Auckland had landed and all these hipsters started pouring through my borders wear nothing but shirts with the islands on them or other nationalistic Kiwi pride shirts. I even saw a guy today walking down the street with a tshirt that a picture of New Zealand on it.

Then again I believe your clothing brands such as Federation and the one that starts with an H pump out proNZ clothing.

I don't mind it, although personally I would never dawn an article of clothing that promoted Australia because that's just bogan. But I suppose for Kiwis it's like walking around in another country with a big flouro flag letting everyone know you're from NZ.

Only the idiots, when I was abroad the only way people knew I was an American was when I opened my mouth.

That's what *you* think 😉

You lot too 😛

The handiest aussie identifier is, of course, a jar of Marmite. You only need to whip it out for the look of disdain to give them away 😀

When you're a white English speaking person overseas it pays to wear something identifying your country so people don't think you're an American.

I probably half 4 or 5 t-shirts with NZ designs - the NZ map has become a pretty trendy brand here :hmm:

...are you kidding? Coming from someone not American, I view Americans as the most nationalistic country on Earth. You should meet a Canadian if you want to meet nationalistic apathy.

If Canada died most Canadians would go 'oh.. that kind of sucks.. hmm.. is there still Timmys? ok, then we're fine'

mmmmm...Timmy's is delicious.

if all the 189348237401 flags flying on every house and car on 9/12/01 didnt give everyone in the world a clue about our very strong nationalism, then no one was paying attention. Flags, EVERYWHERE!

It is not socially acceptable to display nationalism for The United States as it might offend someone.

it's also not socially acceptable to do so if you're from Canandianistan... it automatically means you have an "inferiority complex". this goes for every other country in the world as well.

saying anything negative about the US = OMG INFERIORITY COMPLEX OMG LOLOLOL

One reason Americans come off as arrogant is because of nationalism. I know I live in the greatest country out there, but many people interpret those thoughts as arrogance when it is simply just nationalism. I fully expect foreigners to have similar feelings about their own countries.
