Morrowind type games?

Looking for a new game that's kinda like Morrowind. I don't really want an MMORPG because I don't want to pay monthly fee's. I like how Morrowind plays... you're a person and kinda living out your life... interacting with others, building your skills and learning to do new things, earning money to buy new things. What other games are there that are similar?

Gothic 2 is supposed to be really good. NPC's actually do things based on the time of day. You can watch them get up in the morning, eat, go to work, come home, sleep, etc.

morrowind tribunal expansion, i cant seem to find it but i want it

btw, morrowind is my life, i cant stop thinkiing about it, i have become......

NERAVARINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morrowind has gotten a little boring... I got stuck a while back and haven't felt like touching it since then. I would start over, but it's so boring going through the same thing for the first week (in game) or two.

Never paid much attention to Gothic 2... I'll have to read up on it...

I do like morrowind, but I hate how the world feels so "dead"... nothing happens that you don't do directly (or come about as plot advances). I disagree about it being boring to replay for the first game week... I played a completely different style and found it as enjoyable as the first time through (if not moreso, because I understood what I was supposed to do).

I think the problem is I did a little bit of everything, so I've had a taste of all the different guilds and quests.

I wish Horizons was a bigger hit than it seems to be... I beta tested that game and had so much fun. If it wasn't pay to play I'd be playing it now... but I think it's like $13 per month... and from what I hear, the towns are pretty much deserted at off peak hours so it doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun.

Morrowind is pretty stunning at some points (visually) but it plays a bit slow for me, espcially in the dimly lit areas, its just fustrating to find your way in the dark.

Some of the persistent worlds set up by Neverwinter Nights users are pretty neat. Sort of a MMORPG, but no where as busy. No fees either.

Gothic ,Gothic 2, Arx fatalis all are very good games,I found Gothic one to be a classic but controls are awkard, however in Gothic 2 that`s corrected,as to Arx Fatalis that game can be found very cheap and I also found the the game grows on you as you progress.

Have you picked up Tribunal and Bloodmoon yet? Two expansion packs to Morrowind- if you can't find them on their own you can buy the GOTY edition at Wal-Mart that includes Morrowind and the two expansions for $30.

Shizzle man, the whole MMORPGs with monthly fees thing is about to be a thing of the past, just like paying to play at places like TEN (remember that back in the day?).

See here:

http://www.guildwars.com/

Guild Wars - it's a MMORPG in development, due out H2 04, the project is helmed by three guys from Blizzard who worked in WoW, StarCraft, Diablo, Diablo 2, WC3, and it's got no monthly fee - you just buy the expansion packs as you want them, and of course new content is sometimes streamed onto the servers for free.

Check it out. It has me very excited. The only barrier to me for MMORPGs has been the monthly fee...I'm not paying $60 to buy the game in a store and another $120 to $240 a year to play it. F*ck that.

Not after you pay to create a ring enchanted with the night eye spell 🙂

I actually just started playing Morrowind again yesterday. I'm only at Balmora finishing up the thieves and mages guild quests. I persuaded/admired all of the fighters guild people and use them to buy/sell weapons and to train. My mercantile skill is high enough that I can quickly make 2000 gold off the fighters guild guy starting with only 50 gold.

if the combat in morrowind was more interesting (and more common in the field) it would be more fun. the bloodmoon expansion fixes that...you get on the island and jesus, everywhere you look once you get out of the fort is covered with some rather tough enemies.

but the quests get boring after the first and second time you play the game, and once you learn a couple tricks advancement is trivial and the fun is lost.

think alchemy; cheap, easy (but boring) and the equipment can be had quickly, or if you want to steal, you can have a master set of the stuff in under 20 minutes from starting the game.

Yea, I share some of the feeling mentioned here in this thread. I installed and played Morrowind about a year ago and could not really get into it. besides it didnt run too well on my rig (at the time).

A month ago I picked up the GOTY edition (my rig has since been completley upgraded) for both expansions for $30. Wow, good deal. I installed it and am playing it.....and am sometimes completely blown away by the depth and GFX. But it is of a slower pace and requires alot of time and reading (which for a FPS junkie, is sometimes a hassle). But I don't mind it so much....its good. But then I found myself not wanting to play it :-/ I think its because no matter what I did I felt like it was the wrong thing to do.....or rather, it could have been done better (going on the wrong quests, using the wrong weps...ugh).

But I heard good things about gothic II, picked it up, and played it for about 2 hours and really like it. Warning though, the GFX arnt nearly as good as Morrowind.

I guess what I'm getting at is that if you're going to play Morrowind, you need to realize its going to require a huge time investment. I didnt realize that. My bad. But looking foward to really tackleing it later on.

To throw a little twist into this thread...

What "role" do you all find most fun to play? A Theif, Mage, Warrior/Fighter?

fighter with some majic skills

Usually that. Sometimes, a mage with fighting skills. My most recent character was a theif, but... go figure... I never stole anything except stuff I had to on quests 😉.

I know this is old now and the graphics are crap, but to anyone who hasn't played it yet, I recommend Planescape: Torment.
One of the best games I've ever played.
