Thanks for the advices guys. The only thing is, he's one of my good friends on the floor. But, I'm still mad that he would take it without telling me. I saw him trying to make up random numbers where you put in the serial number for the game and it made me laugh. He's computer illiterate and I told him that he has a better chance being hit by a lighting bolt than randomly typing in a code. Than to my surprise when I stepped out of my room, he must have taken my cd. Im not that mad as in that I will not be able to play when he logs onto CS, but that he did it decievingly. Shame on him. Oh, by the way I did tell him to uninstall the game, but I doubt that will happen.

Maybe you could accidentally PM all responders to this thread with his IP address.

Just go uninstall it for him when he's not there, and from now on take better care to lock your room when not in it if you're worried about people stealing your stuff.
>>

My sentiments exactly. However, I wonder why you bought Counterstrike. I downloaded that off the net. I bought Half Life though. That costs money.

While you're at uninstalling things, you'd also be best off to remember to lock your computer when you're not there as well, unless you make an "example" of someone by beating them up when they touch your computer.

Also, you should probably play CS a little less. Sounds like you're getting a little addicted, man.

Start > Run... > Regedit

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\Settings

Select the "Key" entry. Press delete. It will ask him for a serial the next time he tries to play. :)

EDIT: Search the registry for your serial number with no dashes. Delete any remaining entries.

That was my next suggestion if reformating his drive seemed too extreme. ;) Just tell him that your "tweaking" his video card if he asks what you're doing.

If he's using windows 2000/xp, demote his user account to a simple user. He won't even be able to change the system time! bwahahaha!

If you're on a lan and using a domain you can really play games if you know the admins. So many things can be done with logon scripts it isn't funny.

You can always disable all acceleration functions under the display properties so no games launch. Great way to get 'em to say uncle! :)

Cheers!

Depending on the CD-key limitations (if the server checks it), you can set it for "I cause god to kill kittens" and see what effects come up :)

If you can change his CS name you can change it to something even more disturbing :D

If you really hate him call the security people for the company that makes the game and tell them that he is illegally pirating your game. They will come bust into his room shoot his computer then take him to jail.

But then if they come bust in and shoot his computer they have no prrof, so maybe my idea needs a little work

Tell him to uninstall his copy or you're going to do so when he's not home. Don't enable him to do so; lock up your crap or something. Try actually locking your room next time and not letting people in when you're not home. Also, make sure that your friends aren't shadey characters to begin with.

Not all that hard, man.

<< You say, "I don't appreciate you stealing my CD, and you are going to uninstall it right now." Make sure he knows you are dead serious. If he doesn't, turn him in. That's no different from stealing money. And I am noticing multiple threads about people having stuff taken from their rooms. Doesn't anyone lock their doors? >>

My girlfriend talks about living in an area where she doesn't have to lock her car or her door and such.

Safe neighborhood or not, it's just plain stupid, and it's also asking for it.

I know where she goes to school and she doesn't. When I went there I left my room unlocked all the time. I'd come back to my room and find people watching movies on my TV/VCR all the time. My car didn't even have locks on the doors (the radio had long since been stolen (when I was in class at a community college).

I know that you used to go there. I mean, come on... you're going to raise your hand and ask for a dunce cap too? Seriously, leaving crap unlocked and boasting about it is FREAKING ST00PID.

Besides, if I were a thief, that neighborhood would be THE FIRST place I look. Obviously you guys aren't giving the smarter criminals enough credit. There are locks on things for a reason. And, when I get married, I will NOT leave my house/car unlocked - I don't care if I live in Fort Knox. Well, hell, I think I will live in Fort Knox. :) Read: taking precausions isn't a bad thing. Not taking precausions is frustratingly ignorant.

If he were your friend, he wouldn't be stealing your property. Anyway, take the advice of whoever gave you the registry info and delete the key (and keep it safe from now on) and hope the bonehead didn't have the foresight to write it down somewhere.

If he did, you're going to have to deal with him.

Forget messing up the cd-key you can do much much more damage than that.

Ya, just have his account disabled...

Or if you are really mean, spoof his ip address and get him banned from the servers.

One easy way is to fail at getting admin privileges on the server. :D

LOL

That area is one of the only places in the world where I would leave anything unlocked. Having the feeling of safety and trust that I experienced on that campus was very unique and cool. I don't know if you've been down there yet, but the surrounding area is all million dollar mansions... just finding the school is a logistical challenge. If you don't belong there it's immediately apparent to security and students.

Your GF isn't stupid, just very fortunate.

Plus, if you were a smart theif looking for an easy score, you'd be down in IV. :p

On winXP, you can always install glass2k, check off remember settings, then fire up cs. Then hit CTRL-ALT-9. It'll lag the game so much and get him flamed so often he'll have to uninstall. When he does, he can reinstall his own copy(if he ever buys one) with impunity.

or just yank your key outta the registry ... You can even do it over the network with 2k or xp. hehe.

Actually, I spent a week there. And, yes, that would be the first place I look. Mansions galore. Everybody knows the college is up there. I saw lots of people who looked different and even I seemed to fit in someplace :)P)

I'm not calling her stupid. I'm saying that leaving your crap open for the taking is stupid.
