Fvcking Christ that's insane.

QFT. Also why the US automaker is falling by the wayside in lieu of Mexican/other labor. Hell, foreign automakers are coming into the US and kicking the UAW's ass. They work hard, but they get paid well (not insane like these guys).

Pretty sad....pretty fvcking sad.

See, this is why I think the autoworkers should be able to re-negotiate those contracts. Someone had them by the balls for them to be paying Forklift Operators 100k a year. That's just nuts.

I have absolutely NO compassion for this guy and the fact that he's filing for bankruptcy pisses me off. I bet he drives two massive SUVs and spends about $300.00 a month in gasoline. So much for cutting costs and trimming fat to get by, the union should have taken care of me, so now they should help me file for bankruptcy.

Do you even know how much union dues are? Do you even know what they are used for?

What ever happened to skill = pay? I got my forklift licence in 5 hours, thats it. that is not skill, that is being able to be taught. These people should not be making 75k for a low skill paying job. Unions are good for 3rd, or developing nations, but in a modern nation, they are not needed.

For bribes of political officials and dealings with organized crime? For the Union Leaders to live a life of largess off of? Yes, we know what the dues are for.

There's a reason why there was a massive union split a few months ago.

Tell that to the automaker corperations who are in deep debt or even to the federal government.

Federal debt is good to a degree, unlike the other two.

Aren't you the one who earned his graphics card in ~5 hours? Where's the skill in that?

DETROIT -- Oscar Gray achieved the good life during 28 years of hard work at Delphi Corp. -- a six-figure income, a nice home in Holly and two vehicles.

But as Michigan's auto industry tanked in recent years, the forklift operator lost huge amounts of overtime pay and gradually sank into financial ruin. Saddled with $469,000 in debt, he declared bankruptcy last month.

Gray isn't alone. Once the symbol of blue-collar prosperity, Michigan autoworkers are going bankrupt in alarming numbers as vehicle production declines and overtime pay dwindles.

The United Auto Workers' legal department has handled the bankruptcies of nearly 10,000 of its members, retirees and their families in Michigan since 2002, according to Detroit News research of court records. UAW lawyers estimate that Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 filings in Michigan have been growing at a 10 percent annual clip in recent years.

The bankruptcies show that many Michigan autoworkers are failing to scale back their lifestyles in the face of massive changes slamming the state's bread-and-butter industry.

Gray didn't lose his job. His health isn't failing, and he is not going through a divorce -- the typical reasons many declare bankruptcy.

Gray has been losing overtime. His gross pay was cut $16,000 one year, sliding to $87,000, and may dip again because Delphi is considering a Chapter 11 filing.

"You count on something your whole life and then it gets jerked around," Gray said.

While layoffs have soared, it's often autoworkers still on the job who are drowning in debt.

Loss of overtime is one of the top reasons autoworkers have sought bankruptcy protection the past four years, say attorneys for UAW Legal Service Plan. The plan provides free legal aid to UAW members, retirees and immediate family members.

The typical autoworker in Michigan has lost five hours of overtime per week since 1997 -- which means an average annual loss of $10,000 per worker, according to the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth. For workers in the hardest-hit plants, the loss of income can be far greater.

Overtime at major factories, such as Ford Motor Co.'s Wayne and Wixom assembly plants and General Motors Corp.'s Pontiac East plant, has dropped sharply or been eliminated. In years past, workers at those plants regularly clocked significant overtime.

In addition to a drop in overtime pay, annual cash bonuses paid by Detroit automakers to factory workers have declined in recent years as profits have decreased or disappeared. At Ford, where bonuses averaged $6,700 as recently as 2000, profit-sharing payouts averaged $600 for 2004...

I can't wait until the last union get a stake driven through its heart and all you knownothing kiddies have to deal directly and alone with the corporation you work for. There isn't a single one of you who can't be replaced by somebody willing to work for less.

The UAW has obviously been killing itself, but that has been going on since the 1960's. I agree that some unions have killed their own golden gooses, but not all have. There are good unions who work with the signatories to preserve profits to the company while still offering honest pay and benefits to their workers.

Just remember...you can be replaced by someone better who will work for less too...

So since you can refute anything you respond with name-calling. Great logical fallacy there!

The only fallacy going on here is your ability to still post on this board...

You just spew misinformation and hate, it is quite sickening.

I was lucky when I first started working because one of my mentors (Bob) told me to always bank my overtime pay. He had been working overtime for about 18 years and probably was making 40% more than his base 40-hour week.

When he got to be 55, he retired and had all the money he would ever need. His co-workers, like the guy in this story, inflated their lifestyle and when the overtime went away, they were hurting - even though they were making very good money!

There are a couple of them still working and they sure wish they had done what Bob did.

Just imagine how much you would have to screw up to STILL have a $87K a year job and have to file bankruptcy just because you were no longer making over $100K.
