Aye, and so is 'Criminal Justice' in general. How many jobs in this country DEPEND on crime in order to justify their existence? Federally and at state, county, and city level, hundreds of billions of dollars flow through the system. It's not a system guided by any unifying set of principles, it's merely a self-sustaining/accumulating bureaucracy of epic proportions.

Think about what a 30% decrease in crime/sentencing would do to that industry at large.. how many jobs would be lost, lower contracts for suppliers of supplies and services, less demand for defense lawyers, fewer positions for assistant DAs, less need for patrol officers and detectives, fewer jobs for corrections & probation officers, it's just endless.

get the approval of the majority of the country is going to be easier said than done.
I do believe McCain supports various methods of border control, as he has experience with the problems illegal immigration has caused. I'm not sure of other candidates and what they propose.

What it really is, besides that minority of the prison population that genuinely belongs there (murderers, rapists, etc.) is a massive "make-work" scam that has fully infiltrated and corrupted our justice system. Instead of justice, we pay a portion of the workforce to keep an even larger portion OUT of the workforce.

I read an extremely convincing article somewhere that talked about the aggregate effect of building these walls and fences. Essentially it serves to humiliate and generally piss off generations of those being kept out, and before you know it, you have far bigger problems than what you started with.

Yeah, and? He's not disputing my 30% number. He's saying that it is only a small part of the total US population. Yet he throws that out as if there aren't illegal aliens in state and local jails.

According to this CNN report, the number of illegal aliens in US prisons is over 200k. And there are many states/local cities don't even bother to check the immigration status of their prisoners so who knows what the true number is.

You have to look at state prison populations on a state by state basis but there are many that will obviously have more problems with a growing illegal alien population than others (Arizona vs Montana for instance).

The Berlin Wall was built to keep in a populace that wanted out of an oppressive regime.

A fence along the Mexican-American border would be used to keep people from coming here illegally and hopefully stop all the human and drug-trafficking. They would still be allowed to come here through legal means.

It's worth noting that the Mexican government is WAAAAAAAAAAAY more stringent on illegal aliens than the United States. They are not allowed to hold protests. They are not allowed to own property. They are not allowed access to many of the social services.
