More reasons the schools are getting crappier

My sister is going to high school next year and she was telling me about a few of the changes being made next year.

1) PE is not required if your parents sign a waiver

2) Health, which used to be required, is no longer offered

PE was a fucking joke anyways and just made people smell bad in class.

PE and health were split and we only had them freshman year. Health class was only marginally less of a joke.

I did not like PE, but did not mind health class. I think health class should still be required as it's still some stuff that might be good to be thought. PE should be optional, you don't really learn anything from it, you just end up smelling horrible for your next class. My school was smart though and made PE the last period of the day.

Are you really surprised that a INTERNET FORUM filled with NERDS isn't outraged that they are getting rid of Gym Class?

I did my health class online in two weeks during high school.

I had PE 1 or 2 trimesters. Nothing particularly important about it.

Schools need to be schools and less like day cares in my opinion. Anything non-academic can be done outside of school.

aren't all the fat people in america going to bankrupt healthcare in the next 60 years? seems silly to get rid of health and pe if that's the case

All subjects including art and fitness are important to developing a well rounded human. They're all equally important.

Ya, I'm sure being good at dodgeball will get these kids jobs. Maybe if you're a professional dodgeball player..

If you're going to school for a job, you're doing it wrong. Math and science make you a better corporate drone, art and fitness make you a better person.

I agree 100% about art, but teaching PE in high school is ridiculous.

America is full of fatties. They need fitness education now more than ever. PE should be coupled with a dietary education program to teach these people how to live. They obviously aren't learning at home.

The truth is, a fat person isn't uneducated - they're just lazy and/or stupid. I'm sure the majority of fat people know how to get thin - exercise, eat right, etc, but they're just too lazy to do it. Teaching PE in high school won't do shit to help the situation. Health may help marginally, for those who are too stupid to figure out that if you exercise and eat right, you'll be healthier.

Then you need to ask if its the government's job to make people better people or is it the parents' job.

It's the government's job. They took on the role of education, so they need to educate. That includes all facets of humanity....

That is not new. Your parents could always opt you out of PE

2) Health, which used to be required, is no longer offered

I guess it is too embarrassing to all the fat kids?

At my high school, you had to take PE for 2 years. I took it for 4 years and, some semesters, I signed up for two PE classes at a time (We had college type scheduling). LOL - I was a gym rat (played three varsity sports) and a nerd (help set up the first computer lab at my school).

We also were required to take a shop class (wood, metal, electrical...) every semester.
