Just think about how many people are going to be waiting outside to steal the PS3 from the person that just bought it.

They are going to need police escorts for all of the 100 people that get a PS3.

sony might be attempting to create a demand but with the slew of bad press lately they need to fulfill demand sooner rather than later. Plus more systems sold results in more games/accessories being moved and will help out their quarterly numbers.

With Nintendo claims to have enough for preorders and then some for walk ins, while microsoft was already turning up the production line to scoop up those who couldn't get ps3.

Also with development costs going up and if Sony is unable to provide a large enough base, they'll eventually lose their exclusives to either being multi-system or jumping to the xbox360. I expect even more multi-platform titles due to costs, so exclusives will be something sony needs. Seriously Final Fantasy and MGS isn't going to cut it.

Not supporting sony, but...isn't Gran Tourismo (sp?) a Playstation exclusive?

There is talk of MGS making its way to the Xbox 360.

Personally I think they should jack up the price to $1500 right off the bat and drop it later. .

I was thinking the same thing. Just like what Intel did with C2D. As soon as they can supply the demand they can lower the price to $3. In the end everyone's happy.
