I came in and expected a bunch of reedited scenes, instead I saw a trailer directed towards kids. Not sure what the anger over this is for… the movies were supposed to be also accessible to kids. It’s a rerelease of the movie in 3D, big deal. They’re also rereleasing Titanic in 3D.

lol. Why do people hate Star Wars so much? I did not find it that bad. It does seam Lucas really like to try to squeeze all the money he can out of it though.

People hate the prequel movies and the edited originals.
everyone loves the original originals

Meh...Lucas doesn't hate you...he doesn't care about you...but he DOES care about money, and this will make lots more for him.

Episode I review completed! I never saw the movie, but that review is spectacular. THAT'S why the internet was created :^D

All of his reviews have been good. Better if you've seen the movies, but still good for the entertainment value.

That guy had legit complaints about Ep 1, but completely ran out of gas by Ep 3. That last review spent nearly as much time with the whole dungeon story as the actual review.

well no, the criticisms of how the films were shot are as valid as anything else. shot reverse shot and the rest, epic levels of laziness, he picked out things that people notice but can't put a finger on even in the 3rd eps.

If people "hated" the new ones then they would not make money because nobody would buy them.

However, they did make money. Lots of it. People went to see them and bought them. That means people liked it.

Only losers and nerds get upset about a movie being remade / remastered / sequeled etc.

^When they were first in theaters, the prequels were like a train wreck for diehard Star Wars fans.

After Ep. 1 we knew they were going to be terrible, but we just couldn't look away, which at least partially explains their performance at the box office.

Also dont forget the regular people who dont care much either way and always show up in droves.

People just kept hoping: "Maybe he makes it right in this next movie. Maybe he'll rediscover what made 'Star Wars' great."

Each time, further disappointment.

its called momentum, same reason the matrix sequels also made money. if you want to "see for yourself" how bad it is...it doesn't mean your ticket = approval.

This

The prequels making money had more to do with how awesome the original trilogy was, and very little to do with how good the actual movie was.

Apply his methodology to nearly any movie and see what happens. Apply his methodology to the original trilogy and see what happens. There is a vast difference between picking apart some serious issues that impair Ep 1 and nit picking Ep 3.

His bit about Ep 3 needing a shaky cam is a perfect example. The originals never had a shaky cam, and they didn't suffer for it. Most all of my top 10 of all time movies don't have a shaky cam. In fact, the shaky cam fad is already starting to die out and won't be prominent in movies in a decade or so. There are other, more effective and genuine ways to make a scene intense besides simulating an earthquake for the audience.

The guy felt the need to squeeze out some reviews that slam Ep 2 and Ep 3 without actually having anything other than minor complaints. He then tries to flesh out those complaints into an hour long review.

Most younger people I have met who didn't see the originals until after the prequels (watched them for the first time in numerical order) seem to think the newer ones are better movies. A veil of nostalgia seems to weight heavily on the originals.

well the problem with that criticism is that it sounds like you didn't watch it almost, he does apply it to the originals when he compares and contrasts what is wrong with the new ones compared to the old ones and gives examples.

i don't remember him demanding shakey cam as one of his primary grievances with the movies at all. he only said that the films were filmed in the most lazy way possible, shot, reverse shot, and edited together in the most soap opera manner possible, with people walking, and sitting all the time. this isn't jsut a grievance from red letter media, the original movies were also cut horribly originally by lucas according to one of the original film editors that worked with him. You are always being told there is urgency in the story but you never feel it, the film never conveys anything, they just walk around like dopes on a cg set. It has nothing to do with shakey cam.

Not having any major complaints in 2-3? Are you joking? Every complaint was major, or did you think that george lucas's take on love was dead on... lol.
" “I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.” – Anakin
Yea sounds like no major problems in that film right....

just symptomatic of no one around lucas being able to say WTF ARE YOU DOING!!!

I'm probably in the minority here but I like the new stuffs (minus Jar Jar) and will take my kid to see 3D. If I live long enough to see the holo deck version I'll go to that too.

ill consider 3d star wars if they get to episode IV. maybe.

Just the prequels. They were quick, lazily made films designed to capitalize on the Star Wars brand. It's the Michael Bay method of film making. Make up for weak plot by subjecting the audience to sensory overload.

I grew up at the time when the special edition original trilogy was released. This is when I was introduced to the saga. That was shortly before Episode 1 came out. So I had the advantage of not having the veil of nostalgia. I clearly think the old films are far superior to the new. Since studying television production, that's become more evident.

Episode One is a silly film that would have made more sense as a made-for-TV movie. Still, it was a fun movie.

Attack of the Clones is probably the worst film of the prequels by far. Grating dialogue, and a non-nonsensical romantic subplot. There's really no reason why these too characters should fall in love. Anakin comes off as a dick and a murderer. At the same time, the film tries to make him out to be Space Jesus. Everything felt forced to the point where you simply cannot suspend your disbelief. As RLM correctly pointed out, the film also relies on a lot of retconning and filling in gaps. You're told that stuff happens but you never see/experience it. It's not a fun movie at all.

Revenge of the Sith is overrated. It gets a lot of brownie points for being darker than the first two. However, Michael Bay Syndrome really kicks into high gear this time. The film heavily relies on special effects action scenes to cover for the poor dialogue and character building from the first two films. There's not a lot of talking. But because there's not a lot of dialogue, a lot of things are left poorly explained.

A New Hope as the first film takes a wide departure from it's "predecessors" with Vader as an entirely different character. It hasn't aged as well as the other films. There's a lot that feels dated about it. Luke is an easy character to relate to and the quartet of main characters play well off each other. Generally speaking, Lucas's earlier work is his strongest because the films were a labour of love. You get the sense of that in this movie. It's well made and well acted for the time. It's a good homage to classic adventure serials and comes off strongly from American Graffiti.

Empire Strikes back is a cinematic masterpiece. Out of all six films, it's the strongest. Where it really shines is the strong character development that we hasn't seen in any of the other films. One that finally humanizes our heroes. It's no wonder it contains some of the more memorable scenes, despite having the least amount of action. Indie filmmaker Irvin Kershner was a strong choice to direct. It shows how relying on the strengths of your talent can really pay off, contrasted to the micromanagement of the prequels.

Return of the Jedi is probably the weakest of the originals. Mainly for the Endor scenes, which I think were unnecessary. This is Lucas starting to slip into commercialized film making. It's very unlikely a troop of teddy bears could take down the Empire's best soldiers. Aside from that, I think the rest of the movie is strong. The scenes with the Emperor are brilliant. Plus it had the best space battle of the entire saga, all done without CGI.
It's a fun movie that I love to watch. Unfortunately, it's also been the most butchered of the originals, with the "new content" being largely pointless.

If the story for the prequels was coherent, then I could forgive the other issues in the movies (horrible acting, Jar Jar, Trade Federation, Yoda flying, Qui-Gon, Jake Lloyd, General Grievous, virgin birth, bombs in their heads....and they'll blow you up, stupid character names, gungans, Mace Windu, double-sided lightsabers, Tusken Raider rape, Yoda puppet, that thing in the Cafe that Obi-Wan meets, kid killer, "rescue" of Palpatine in the beginning of Ep3, nooooooooooooo, i hate you!!!, etc). I'm tired of thinking of the bad parts. And most of my gripes are already covered by Plinkett...

I'd rank them 5, 4, 2, 6, 3, 1. That means I might go see AOTC when it's re-released.
