More people take anti-depressants than I thought

my mother-in-law told my wife she should, but we don't think drugs are the answer to everything

I think it is prescribed much more than most of us realize. I'm sure alot of people are taking them and aren't telling others about it.

I'm sure it's very common in this current economy. Heck, reportedly one of Bush's campaign aids said something to the effect (over a speakerphone, overheard by a reporter) that people who are unhappy with the employment market (the unemployed and underemployed) should take Prozac. That's the Bush solution to our nation's job market ills--the unhappily unemployed and underemployed should take Prozac. Why'd we elect this bozo again? Americans might not have good middle class jobs, but hot damn we won't have gay marraige either!

Well actually Zoloft is non-habit-forming and is not harmful to take for long periods of time at all. It's not a "happy pill," it just helps destress you and regulate your emotions.

so what you are saying is, you don't take anti-depressants, if you did, you would have a nice calm/short response and not a twisted liberal/anit-Bush response

right
did you copy/paste that from the Pfizer website?

Well, just look at how many new drugs there are on the market, and how many commercial advertisements you see for anti-depressants. Pharma companies are profit-maximizing firms like anyone else, and the growth of the market should indicate something about use of these drugs.

The scary thing is a lot of doctors are pressured by the pharm reps to prescribe their particular drug, and there are millions of free samples floating around their offices. I was prescribed Paxil CR at one point, but thankfully I got a second opinion from a psychologist who determined I did not have clinical depression. BTW, in a previous thread I indicated I am taking an NRI but did not mention that NRIs are NOT anti-depressants! They are for adult attention deficit disorder.

I never have, nobody in my family ever has. My brother was on Ritalin for a few years in highschool, and it helped him tremendously, but once he graduated he stopped and he's actually leveled out a lot since then. But never any anti-depressants.

You and I are becoming a rare breed. Seems most want a "pill" to fix their problems.

Better living through chemicals. God forbid people actually deal with their problems.
You obviously know nothing about depression, for if you did you'd not say that, but such an attitude is common on the depression threads.

how is Ritalin not an anti-depressant?
it is a stimulant, if anti-depressants aren't stimulants, what are they?

i am not a pharmacist, but what i have read about Ritalin , it sounds like an anti-depressant

I know more about it than you might think. I'm not saying there aren't people who have a genuine physical problem that these drugs can fix, but they are overprescribed like you would not believe. Often times physicians won't even discuss alternatives like counseling, but will just write a script based on one office visit.

It's a cop-out. What we really need is less sexual repression.

That's funny cause the one person that I definitely know is on an anti-depressant is because of sex (children).
