More Leaked Images of the R600

That card is enormous. Why do I have a feeling that the R600 is going to be a lot of hype with a lot of waiting but turns out to be something like the Voodoo 5 or 6 (They are similar in length)

Wow...does that have one of those front case notches for support like 1980s 'long' cards? I don't think most cases have provisions for that anymore, so I'm probably wrong and have forgotten just how long those old cards really were.

I don't mind huge cards myself...as long as that thing doesn't sound like the dust busters.

My "old" Thermaltake Xaser III V2000A case has those notches that you're talking about and it's only 4 years old :Q.

Screw David, that card is going to make this upcoming GPU war into Goliath vs Goliath!
 
Seeing that HUGE cooler makes me think it's going to eat a lot of watts and output a lot of heat. All back of the card is plated. I don't doubt it's going to be powerfull.

that's the OEM cooler.
 
I would be pretty disapppinted if they can't design an effective cooler that doesn't add like 3-4" to the total length of the card. As someone already mentioned, this is most likely the OEM version. It's possile that the retail cooler is smaller, but also more costly, which would explain why the OEM market might prefer the larger one. Either way, if the card pictured turns out to be retail, the size will be an obstacle for most and would probably hurt sales. Nothing much longer than an 8800GTX will fit into my case. The GTX is already pretty tight.

Sorry to say it but if you need to make a card that is almost 1 1/2 feet long just to compete then your R&D team needs retooling. Seriously, this is why I don't trust ATI.
Smaller = better. This will destroy ATI.

This is the OEM card (for companies like Dell). It's designed to be braced on both sides of an OEM case.

The retail version probably doesn't have that big honking piece on the back end with the large fan.

Did you read any of the posts above yours? That is a pic of the OEM model that we've been hearing about. The OEM is supposed to be 12-13" long and the retail is ~9" long. OEM's have cases specifically made for the card so there is no worry that it won't fit. The retail model is supposedly shorter than a G80, so according to your logic we shouldn't trust Nvidia and this will destroy them. :disgust:
 
It's all well and good that this is the OEM version, but I still haven't seen one photo of the supposed retail version. I'm starting to think it's a little strange that we haven't seen the retail version yet, after all, everyone keeps pointing to the OEM 7800's that were full-length cards, but those came after the retail cards and I've never seen a situation in which the early photos show something as ridiculous as this (excluding the V5 6000 and its external power supply).

If there are photos out there of the shorter retail version, please link them. Until I see that, I'm going to consider this to be R600.

It could be that OEM's have these cards in there hands so they can design cases. That's why pics would be more likely to leak.

Maybe, but that's never been the case in the past... the lack of retail-style cards floating around plus the delays are starting to add up to a problem with power draw/heat IMO. Only time will tell though.

Dailytech is considered a pretty reliable source and it had the following to say about R600:

"Late yesterday DailyTech was briefed on the final details for the upcoming R600 retail specifications, just in time for everyone to go on vacation for Chinese New Year. AMD has briefed its board partners on the specifications that will appear on the marketing material for the card launches...

ATI guidance claims the X2900 XTX retail card comes as a two-slot, 9.5" design with a vapor chamber cooler. Vapor chambers are already found on high-end CPU coolers, so it would be no surprise to see such cooling on a high-end GPU either. The OEM version of the card is a 12" layout and features a quiet fan cooler."

I understand that ATI is claiming the retail version will be a shorter design, but the fact that one has yet to appear anywhere along with the continuing delays has just raised a red flag for me. Maybe they aren't having any issues with power delivery or cooling at all, but based on the current situation i think power/heat problems should now be considered among the potential reasons for the delays.
 
Regardless of whether or not it's an OEM model doesn't quell the nagging feeling I get when I see this comedic card. I feel the same way with the 8800 series. I wonder if anyone else feels like a fool when they buy a card like this, not only because they are almost twice the cost of the CPU, but they never seem to bother to revolutionize the technology itself. It's just the same old card with just more of this and faster that.
I seriously hope this trend doesn't continue, otherwise they will design themselves out of an almost 90% of the demographic who don't feel the need to get a 4 foot long case just to house this thing, not to mention the god-awful power efficiency these things lack.

I mean, the core 2 did it and did it well. Why can't the gfx card industry do it?

But I mean, hell I'm a PC enthusiast and will always get the latest and greatest. I just feel its time for efficiency to take over.
