IBM to Move Software Jobs to India, China My buddy up in IBM Boulder is gonna be losing his job :(

With more and more companies doing this "offshoring" what is going to happen to our economy? I mean, more jobs gone from the US means less people here with money, so less products they can buy from the companies that offshore and more. Sounds like a horrible downward spiral to me.

12-15-03 IBM shifts 4,730 HIGHLY Paid Jobs to India & China

Sorry about your friends job but the AT Experts in here say that he can go down to the local Wal-Mart, get a job and his wages will actually go UP! The AT Experts in P&N swear it is only LOW paying, UNskilled jobs going overseas and that we all must adapt or die. Adapt to stocking shelves and flipping burgers and that is the greatest thing for the U.S. Economy and the New American Dream and Rich. That's a UPward spiral, read for yourself in the thread as said by the AT Economy experts.
I didn't know we had that forum ;) thanks :)

Welcome to P&N Laust

The two sides you have on this is a group of AT Economist Experts that believe and tout every Government report, basically grazing sheep happy to see the Corporate destruction of America and a growing group that opening their eyes and minds and not happy with what they are seeing.

Lord knows when I buy a Stanley hammer from Walmart, it's not as good as the Stanley hammer from the local hardware store.

The price difference between walmart and sears, target, homedepot and thousand other stores is big enough to justify lack of service?

I can't even find anything named stanley on walmart website. Just shows you they are cheap and have no quality products.

Could you be more of an ass? Didn't think so.

If you want service, you pay the premium at your mom & pop local hardware store instead. If you know WTF you want, you get it at Target, Walmart, Kmart or Sears. You walk in, grab your Stanley, Black & Decker or whatever tool you want, and checkout. Don't like it, don't shop there. They'll be around for decades, putting these price gauging, mom & pop shops out of business all the while.

I have nothing against other stores but you can't possibly compare Walmart with any of the other stores you mentioned. They are lot better than walmart. I am not asking for a top of the line service either just an option of buying good quality merchandise with clean isles and proper signs posted. All of the above are missing at walmart.

If your local Walmart is dilapidated, they not only will NOT be going out of business, they will be replacing it with a brand new Super Walmart soon. Complete with wonderful glossy signs for you to ogle during your precious shopping excursions.

DM, I'm sure you speak for all of AT with a statement like that

Nobody in this thread claimed to be an economic expert, but many have provided good arguments for why corporations are outsourcing to India. Also, the outsourcing plan by companies is still in its experimental phase, it has not proven to be successful (Dell and Lehman Bro's have pulled out of India).

You cite "corporate destruction" but link to a thread that has evidence of AOL cutting its workforce by 2%, and "12-15-03 IBM shifts 4,730 HIGHLY Paid Jobs to India & China". Worrying about job security because of things like this is like worrying about every murder that occurs in the US: in the overall scheme (our recession/depression) of things it doesn't matter, the murder rate is always either declining or increasing just like the economy. Try proposing a viable solution instead of doomsaying, there are many homeless people who already fill that role.

Sigh.....I know, but they have had great tech support in Ireland and England. I can't understand a damn word they say when they have techs over in India/China. Im changing more and more into the more American it is the better.

Oh the horror!? What ever will the Americans laid off do?? Here's a clue: learn a new skill and stop whining about it.

People already spent 4-8 years getting their degrees to get those jobs. It's not for everyone to just learn another skill and get a new job. A whole lot of sectors are sending jobs oversears, it's not just engineering and computers.
How many years do these overseas workers spend getting their degrees? Maybe we ought to stop lining the pockets of universities and their professors instead, eh?

Same as us. Bachelors degrees in Engineering are mostly 4 years in most countries I have met people from. Some have 3 year programs.

Well, we've reaped the benefits of their cheap labor, in the form of low prices for clothes and manufactured goods. Looks like it's catching up with us on the other end. If my son's educations don't pan out, they can always work with me... getting their hands dirty! :Q
