FC3 was one of the few games that I've played to completion lately. I will admit though that at some point I just wanted to get to the end of the story. The repetition in gathering plants or doing the same missions got tiring. Luckily, the last 25% of the game is more of a scripted story than free play.

If I were a lead developer, I would alter the gameplay of whatever game i'm working on at about 50% of the way through, shake things up a bit, especially in such games where you repeatedly perform certain types of tasks for various things.

Then again, apparently some people like to grind at the most mundane things as some of the MMO's show.

I actually ended up bored with the game halfway through. I think I quit around the part where you burned down the drug field.

The game was certainly beautiful, and I did like the little aspects they put into the game. The first time fire spread to the surroundings was awesome. The 'high' they gave your character from burning the drug field was also a cute addition.

But I found that I lost interest with the game pretty quickly. There was nothing that really kept my interest.

Hunting had nothing special to it. I think I liked the hunting/trapping aspect for AC3 better. Not necessarily because of the gameplay with the actual hunting, but because there was a more intricate benefit from gathering supplies in AC3 from the crafting/trade side missions.

Assassination/revenge missions were pretty lame from the start. Most were in a wide open field where the only one kill that mattered was the knife to the target in question. Maybe if they had more caves/buildings/rooms where you needed more forethought in your kill it would have been interesting.

The skill tree was rather forgettable. Having to unlock 'normal' abilities didn't lend to anything interesting. They could have probably done away with the skill tree completely. Tie the 'move unlocks' with assassination missions. Have things like health/medicine increase tie in with the craft menu.

It really didn't help that I couldn't get to like the MC at all. He was constantly bitching/whining because of his bad scenario, but right when I was starting to sympathize with him, he would turn into a moronic thrill seeker and say something along the lines of 'grenade launchers are awesome!'

Overall, really well polished game. Beautiful and glitch free. But there was nothing special that drew me into the game to keep me interested. The extra aspects were boring. The MC was unlikable.

I think FC3 would be a good candidate for a DayZ type mod.

Winner. It's a perfect candidate for a total conversion type project. Someone could make an amazing survival sim or DayZ-like zomibie game with all the basic building blocks in FC3. The engine, setting and atmosphere in FC3 were great. But the gameplay was extremely shallow and simplistic and so repetitive I never finished the game.

I understand the (expansion?) DLC is a hell of a lot of fun but I haven't tried it yet. Something about a post apocalyptic 80's movie setting.

The DLC is called Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. Its pretty sick. If you want a nostalgic trip, this is the game to play....

As for my opinion of Far Cry 3, The story was good but the ending sucked.
I mean after you choose your ending, I chose the save my friends. They could of showed a cinematic of the boat ride to America and Jason can explain everything about his endeavor to rescue his friends and Grants Death....

Above is one of the may examples on how they "could" improve the ending to the story.

I agree with the OP. I could not stop believing how good the game was.

Far cry 3 for all intents and purposes is an extremely fun game. I am close to the end and its been a ton of fun. I am not stating it doesn't have issues but the beautiful world is something I wish more games had.
