More 8GB R9 290x cards coming in november [Videocardz]

Yes please forgive the videocardz link, but apparently the source is Sweclockers. So, is this a PR stunt or is this actually useful for 2k/4k resolutions? Perhaps they are responding to rumors of the 8gb 980s that Nvidia is supposedly holding back on?

Nobody is "holding back" any 8GB cards.

They also say 2 290X Sapphire 8GB cards are released. They seem to have it confused with 295X2 cards.

Check out the KG link, I don't think they have confused them with the 295x2.

No. Sapphire released R9 290X 8GB Toxic and R9 290X Vapor-X 8GB in select markets a long time ago.

Select markets may be an understatement. It sounded like a custom order.

I have been told that the entire stock of 8GB Sapphire models are solely for OcUK (and possible partners outside the UK), meaning that if there is interest outside the UK, Sapphire will have to make some more. Unfortunately what I am hearing suggests that no more will be made.

A shame it wasnt more broadly avaliable.

In pure BOM I guess 4GB more will add 40-60$ depending on GDDR speed.

With the absolutely ridiculous VRAM requirements that these next gen console ports seem to be throwing around, it wouldn't hurt to have a few more options on the market for those that want a bit of a buffer above minimum requirements.

I think the entire forum already understood that AMD is waiting until 2015 for technologies like HBM and 20nm to mature. The real competition for AMD is Big Maxwell so if they only released a card 20% faster to match a 980, it would have been a failure imo.

HBM isnt going to change VRAM size as such. Maybe even downgrade instead. Its the speed thats the main goal. And HBM is an evolution on GDDR.

4k with next gen games will certainly require lots of vram. I've seen well over 3 GB but not quite 4 GB yet. That's in the few older games I've been playin.

I don't care about 20% improvement at current resolutions. My next monitor will be 4k and hopefully the next generation card will run 4k with just one card. If either company can provide that, I would consider that leaps beyond anything we have right now.

1080pTN is passe where as 1440p PLS is a bare minimum today.

I don't necessarily think it's a gimmick card. It just gives potential buyers more choices. When you consider that for several upcoming games the recommended minimum are 4GB cards, having more VRAM couldn't hurt. Two of these 8GB cards in crossfire would also set you up for quite a while. Either way, the extra VRAM can't hurt.. well maybe only your wallet

This is happening because of OCUK asking its customers what they want and they asked for more 8GB versions as well as reference versions and seeing as there are at least 3 AMD Reps who are members it seem that a mention was made higher up at AMD to what is going on so it seems that AMD thought lets make it official.

They wouldn't be worried about it if they didn't think it would be needed. Remember just a few months ago we had people arguing that 2gig was all anyone would need for the foreseeable future when they were hawking GTX770's.
