if youre going to be useing a good amt of bandwidth 500megs+ a day or something then you shouldnt leech.

I'd rather have the security and reliability of my own network. Not to mention it will affect their service so it's a shi~tty thing to do. If you do it, I hope you use a honeypot and/or someone intercepts all your personal data 😛

😕 Wow you guys are amoral people. 80% of you would have no problem leaching off wireless bandwith from their neighbor.:disgust:

The dude said that he thought it was OK to leech, provided you weren't a bandwidth burden and you paid for a service. He had the idea that people that use the internet should all pay thier share to use and support it. As long as one pays their "usage license", so to speak, it is ethically OK to leech bandwidth, according to the NPR guest.

The example he gave was a guy that paid for DSL and had a desktop PC. He bought a laptop and found that there was an unsecured network available. He still subscribed to the DSL service, but used the lappy for surfing and light internet usage when it was convenient.
 
I would be tempted to set up a Linux box and see if I could load balance between their connections. 5 pipes, even small, is still a pretty fat pipe 😀
 
Is this a moral question because its illegal, or a moral question because its legal but the current laws on the books aren't good enough for you? 🙂
 
I listened to that NPR story with Randy Cohen yesterday and I'm not entirely sure I buy his POV. If you use someone's WLAN without their permission then it's cheating. It's not just the Internet access that comes into play. Having the ability to roam around surfing on a laptop is a convenience that someone else paid money for by purchasing an AP, if you want that capability then you should buy your own.

I can get on 5 different unsecured wireless networks in my apartment but that didn't stop me from going out to buy a WRT54G.
 
I understand that it's 'stealing' because I'd not be using it without their consent.

I'll pay for a while and see if I can't make any friendly neighbors. Even if I limited myself to 50KB/sec using NetLimiter, that'd be great!

Time will only tell. :thumbsup:
 
Is there a way I can connect to their networks and specify a program to use a specific network card without having a totally seperate computer? ie: To tell Internet Explorer to use NIC#1 and tell my newsgroup program to use NIC#2?
