Emails to whitehouse.gov from their connection could be fun... post pics when the guys in the black shades show up ;)

Bah do both. I actually admin the networks for my two immediate neighbors. It was just easier than having them call me at all hours when things weren't working.

i buy my own since i use enough bandwidth to justify it -- right now, we have 6 computers connected to our router so it's kind of essential to have our own service up and running.

however, if i am taking my laptop to someone's place and there's an unsecure access point up and running, i'd be inclinded to use it temporarily and then go home and not worry about it. i've done it before, and i'd do it again. it's only temporary.

Just come back from White Castle or something? :p

This weekend on NPR (yeah, I know...) someone asked the "ethicist" whether it was OK to use unsecured WAP's (Link.)

The guy responded that it was OK if you already subscribed to DSL or the like - the point the guy was trying to make is that if you already have a service, you've already made your contribution to the collective whole....

Therefore, get netzero, pay $4.95/month for crappy dial-up, and steal away!!

i wouldn't have a problem with leeching with all those options. i wouldn't set up a workgroup and use it to share files, but for internet for stand alone systems, why not?

Leech, and then leech some more. I would leech on one, then choose another, then another. It's like a radio wave buffet :D

I think that I heard that your community has set up free wireless access in your area. All you need to do is login to an available unsecured network and surf away. Don't feel bad about it; the city is footing the bill. ;)

I doubt if they could, seeing as they don't lock up their wireless stuff already.

And we all know the IT-clueless are NEVER related to anyone remotely IT-savvy who comes to visit from time to time to figure out why their connection is so slow.

"Linksys" probably still has the default admin password, if you want full control, you can take it :D

why not? because youre not paying any of the bill! pathetic.

op, put yourself in their shoes. would you want someone leeching off of you? just because theyre ignorant and dont secure their network doesnt mean you should prey on that. the best thing to do would be go give them a heads up and let them know. you may get lucky, and they wont care and give you permission for being honest about it.

What are you going to do with all the bandwidth, if you are a bandwidth whore as you say? Download legal documents?

Yeah, that's what my GF and I think we're going to do. If I found a suitcase full of money, I'd turn it in to the police. If my buddies and I are going to have a LAN party here or something, then for temporary use I think it'd be alright if they hopped on the unsecured WAPs.

What would I do with the bandwidth? Let's just say I have a use for it.

I'm not sure what I would do. It would be tempting, but I like having "my own", so I would probably just go ahead and pay.

someone paid for the service already, so you're not stealing from the phone/cable company.

if it makes you feel better, track them down and give them a couple bucks a month.

Yes 'but' your stealing 'their' bandwidth without paying :p but they aren't 'securing' it...:p

Why is the net $50 a month? Pay for a slower service if you can.

It is easier to not throw burgers in to rooms then to secure a wap :p
