At least you're eating it. I for one would have only killed it if absolutely neccessary, and if that happens I'd go at it like a real man with a pocket knife. It wouldn't stand a chance against my lunacy.

How do you store 150 lbs of meat? What's the shelf life? It would sure be a shame if it eventually went bad... terrible waste of life and good meat that would be.

it's a shame that you are an asshat. Get over it, if you dont like hunting, then dont come in the post...as it was clearly stated "not for non hunters, etc." it amazes me how people are okay with butchering cows, fish, lamds, sheep, and what not but shoot a moose or deer and they get their panties all in a bunch!

i cant really go against killing animals for food consume... but if u r just killing them for fun thats not right... maybe im just living in a nutshelll...

I dont shoot animals for fun, I like to eat venison, moose, patridge, fish, etc.
It is healthier, and it keeps me form having to visit the supermarket too much...

why do you some of you people get in the op's sh!t? unless you are a hardcore vegan you eat meat, and where the f*ck do you thing meat comes from? an animal.

and if anybody like beef jerky, try venison jerky - it is soooo goood. i will drive 200mi out of my city to get it up north. :D

iamtrout - i hope you are joking about how to store the meat. how do you store any meat? like Eli says, in a freezer. and your idea of how you would kill it (i hope you are joking) would cause much stress and pain to the moose. the way SaigonK killed it was nearly painless and it was probably dead by the time it hit the ground.

krnxpride83 - the op stated several times that he eats the meat, thus this is not killing for fun.

anno - as far as taking the pic first, the moose would probably hear the sound of the camera, depending on how close you are and possibley scare it away. animals senses are so much better adapted than ours because they live in a constant eat/be lunch for another predator so they are always on alert.

Eli - the meat won't be virtually free at first. over time if you keep up with it the price will come down. there is the price of the equipment, but if you know somebody who does hunt, you could probably buy some off them for a decent price. :D

SaigonK - you say the meat is really lean, is it lean like chicken/turkey? does it have a lot of cholesterol? do you prefer moose over deer?

Congrats and what kind of rifle caliber were you using to take down the Moose. From my arnsel, I would only be able to use my .300 Win Mag. And how far did you take it down from? Awesome... Planning on making a jerky? If so I would pay you money for the Jerky... ;)

Nice
I have yet to get my first Moose and I hate Mooses to pieces.
Drawn for Mulies again this yr and since most of last years is gone only 3 or 4 packs of sausage left, looking forward to it.
I did get a quarter of a Buffalo in the freezer last week so I should be good til the season and processing and so on.
How you get him, call him in or just wandering about?
I shot a skunk last night but I don't think I'm going to eat it;)

Umm you are way off base here. A bastard is someone who is hunting illegally/poaching and just kills the animal for no reason at all.

This guy is legally hunting and harvesting an animal for food which is not bad because it will actually make the herd stronger.

Congrats on the moose. Little one eh? ;) So did all four guys have tags, or only a couple? Unfortunate that you all didn't have better luck if there were more tags.

My dad and I didn't get drawn for elk this year in Montana, so only whitetail in MN. It's OK though, with my new job I don't have any vacation time yet and can't do a ton of hunting this fall. :(

At Ft. Campbell, hunters that dont want to take their kill home drop off the dead deer at the game and wildlife center, and then anyone can go in and get a free deer if someone donated one.

My buddy went there last week and picked up 2 deer. He has PLENTY of meat now in the freezer.

Other than chronic wasting disease, what about bovine tuberculosis? I know that is a concern with deer, is it so with moose? And how do you check for it? Do you check for nodules in the lung?

where were you hunting?

I don't really care for moose meat but my uncles bring it over all the time so we eat it a few times a year.

Yup, I am a bastard...I just had a nice juicy steak about an hour ago...and I guess I should run right out and kill a cow instead of a moose right?

I eat everything I shoot, i dont mount trophy wall units, or that type of stuff....so dont criticize me for hunting an animal, then providing my family with the meat...

In alot of places, especially if he has a high moose population he could have actually saved some moose lives by killing one or two.

Nice, a friend of mine got an elk last year and had to pay a sh!tload to get the meat sent back to NY. I don't even want to know what he paid to get it mounted either.... did you have to pay for that?

i prefer moose over deer, deer is usually a bit stroner in taste, moose is so much beter.
Compared to a steak, moose is so much better for you.

A normal steak is 6-7% fat while a moose steak is only .5% fat...quite a difference!
A 3/4 pound moose steak has over 100grams of protein in it.

Chicken and Turkey actually have more fat than moose...

here in maine one person gets a tag, and you have another person who can shoot with you when you find a moose...they also have an alternate in case your subpermitee gets sick or cant go on the hunt.

It isnt a factor in moose, in Maine, there have been no cases of that in deer either.
Suprisingly it must be the large tracts of free open space and the extremely low population of domesticated animals to the amount of land we have here.

no mounting of the head for me...I gave it to my friend who wanted to do it, I am all about the meat. It costs about $1000 to get it mounted and you dont get it back for like 6-12 months...crazy...

In Wisconsin they have drop off sites around the state for deer. You drop off the deer and they butcher it and store it and serve it at homeless shelters and such throughout the year.
