Yes, but that's not nearly anywhere near why they charge so much. They charge so much because they CAN, not because they need to. Best Buy is like the Wal*Mart of electronics, they buy things in very large quantities and I can bet you that they are easily charging more than twice of what they get it for. They choose to not be competitive with online stores because they don't need to. With Wal*Mart selling more and more of these items, I wouldn't be surprised to see some changes soon enough...Originally posted by: shoRunner

It's not what's so great about the "power thing-a-ma-bobs" so much as what's so great about hte TVs. You buy a $4000 TV, and $500 to "protect" it doesn't seem so bad.
you get what you pay for, most think that it's a gimmick, but they simply have no idea what they're talking about. I saw it for $49.99 and bought a box of them to sell on eBay, people standing behind me were pissed because I took all that they hadOriginally posted by: state 08
Don't hate on the Monster USB cable until you've tried it.
I got my Monster 6ft USB cable at a steal for $69.99.
The guy at Bestbuy told me the gold plating on the ends will help transfer the files faster AND improve picture quality. He wasn't kidding!! A full Memory Card loads 15 seconds faster on to the computer, and I was going to buy a DSLR, but now I'm just going to stick with my Point and Shoot because the Monster USB cable improves the quality of the pics to level better than DSLR.
Why would they do that when the person is ready to spend $500 on something with a larger profit margin?Originally posted by: biggestmuff

How about $80 - $100 for an APC.

it depends... when i worked with the record studio high quality cabled were a must because not having one that works right can mean several hundred dollars down the drain. cheap cables tend to separate at the solders and lose quality signal more. this is more often for cables you disconnect/reconnect often though.
for the general home user they will never notice a difference yet need to disconnect/reconnect more than say 5 times. but moderately priced cabling has a higher bend ratio, gold plating, a higher quality made connector. so unless u make your own cables or know good places to get them I would never get the cheapest cabling money could afford.

Some local shops, more specialized ones in my experience, will to a decent degree, understand that and work with me on a price. They're able to target both customers who research what they buy and know their options as well as those who don't.
I've found that a proper online store won't get you many things, outside of computers, much cheaper than a retail location, especially after you've pointed this out to them. They have large profit margins for the typical consumer and they know it.
Edit: I guess this also needs more clarification... what kind of items do you buy online? I think a lot of people on AT just buy computer equipment, cables, etc. online and so it may not really benefit them, but once you get into hobbies like RC cars, RC planes, high end audio/video equipment, etc. then you have some room to talk to them. It depends on the shop obviously as well...
can't blame them for profit maximizing... if you were best buy you'd be selling cables at 100% markup as well.Originally posted by: AgaBoogaBoo

Right, no blame at all, just pointing out why they don't need to charge what they do, which I guess is a point I wasn't responding to, but that had just been on my mind. Some people feel that shops need to charge this much when that's far from reality.Originally posted by: ElFenix
