Monoprice RedMere HDMI cables general discussion

That's cool that Monoprice actually responded in this message board. Looks like a communication rep was getting basic info at first then more thorough info from the tech reps. I wrote both Monoprice & RedMere.

Here is a copy of the replies from RedMere. This is pretty much a repeat of what was already stated:

First and foremost, all RedMere enabled cables, by which we mean those cables that incorporate RedMere's booster modules, can be readily certified through HDMI ATC. Refer to our web-link for readily available certified cables (http://www.redmere.com/customer/cable_guru.php). HDMI.org does support active cables. There are specific compliance tests in the HDMI.org ATC that test active cables. Typically in the past, before RedMere pioneered their active-cable approach, to achieve long-cable runs (>7m) obligated the need for repeater boxes (either as a stand-alone unit or incorporated into the cable). These units did use a dedicated power source. Certainly these were not optimised for HDMI. With RedMere's boosters, you do not need a dedicated power source.

Regarding the question of "how to harvest from a sink that does not supply power" - that is a good question. However the specific technique that RedMere uses, does not draw power this way. It has developed a patented technique that utilizes other sources of current from the available HDMI lines.


In response to the latest thread.

Specifically on the latest thread, RedMere chips source power through the output driver of the equalization circuit from the sink device, using proprietary circuit techniques referred to earlier. RedMere does not claim to power the equalizer solely from the 5V line – in fact that is one of the main challenges that our technology can overcome and as each programmed cable is tested at production – each and every cable is guaranteed to work and deliver full 1080p HH as well as being 3D and 4K compliant.

HDMI ATC tests that the cable should not draw >5mA, in test mode (paraphrasing from the ATC test spec “A cable assembly shall be able to supply a minimum of 50mA to the +5V Power pin to a Sink, even when connected to a Source supplying no more than 55mA&#8221😉.


The receiver chips in the TV are HDMI compliant. This means that they are designed to support the standard, part of which is the power requirement, which in fact is a normal operating condition. Hence no issue with adverse stress. As RedMere enabled cables are HDMI compliant, they do not stress the TV.

Are they going to be available in Canada at reasonable prices. It's the one thing I hate about HDMI cables, the thickness and general stiffness of the cables.
 
Well, that obviously depends on how much shipping charges are to Canada. Why not go to monoprice and find out how much things costs to ship to you?

Dhoo, I assumed (wrongly) they would not ship to Canada, LOL Thanks.
 
Hmm..it's "early" in February and I still can't find them for sale...anyone know of a more definite time they are going to be available?
 
I was considering getting these to replace my 3 DVI cables going to my 3 monitors. It would clean up the clutter a bit
 
Was going to grab a few of these but couldnt wait any longer. Which pissed me off because i could have ordered what i needed well over a month ago but actually thought they would keep there timeline. Guess i should know better than to trust timelines from a company that orders all their stuff from china.
 
It would be nice. I really want one for my SGS2, having a huge honking HDMI cable hooked up to that MHL adaptor just looks wierd, would much prefer a smaller cable. I use my SGS2 multiple time a week to output HDMI to a TV at work.
