Not quite. According to wikiwikiwoo, basic 1080p under version 1.3 required a category 2 cable and that carried forward as High-Speed under version 1.4. Note monoprice 20-35' flat cables are Standard supporting only 1080i. So yeah, High Speed with Ethernet really is needed for current features to avoid gambling. Their price is not particularly higher but rather it just reflects current manufacturing and testing standards.

Didn't the HDMI spec rename the 1.3 and 1.4 versions of HDMI regular and high speed?

So in a nutshell the latest/future HDMI specs are in the "high speed" cables and the "regular" HDMI cables handle what we have now which is 1080P....As the high speed can support 4K and some other stuff.

That was what I was referring to, the naming.

Yes the naming is quite annoying. I think it was better when they used version numbers.

FYI, I just got a 50th ultra slim redmere cable. I was having some intermittent problems with a 35ft passive Monoprice cable. Every once in awhile the picture would freeze (but audio would continue). I've read that this can sometimes result from a marginal signal. In any event, the new cable appears to be working fine.

So, I was browsing through Anandtech's CES coverage, and I came across a Rosewill entry. I didn't think much of it until I saw the end where they said that Rosewill is manufacturing RedMere-based cables now.

As expected, you can find them on NewEgg:

At the time of writing, the 15ft cable is on sale for $16.99!

EDIT:

FYI: The code "EMCNJJJ48" will get you 20% off all HDMI cables including the ones above. I believe this code lasts until Sunday! Unfortunately, I ordered a few yesterday and spent $10 more than I needed to. :p

Did you ever try the Redmere cables in place of your DVI cables? I'd like to do the same thing, but I'm concerned over power. I would be going from the DVI-I port on the back of my MacPro computer and using a DVI to HDMI adapter. While the signals are identical, will this supply the 5V to the HDMI cable to power the Redmere devices?
