monoprice credit card breach?

Folks over at the FW Finance forum have been talking about this for a couple of days (some of them were hit).

It surprises me that Monoprice hasn't acknowledged the breach.

?? What? They shut down orders over the weekend. If thats not acknowledgement I don;t know what is.

BUT for those that did get charges, what and where were they to?

an "Acknowledgement" is a call or email stating we've had a breach.

who goes to monoprice every freaking day to check if their site has been breached?

I got a phone call from Chase today - several weird charges. I had a few - one for $4.59ish, one for $0.02 (wtf), one for $50-something from some movie place..etc. Seems they all were made today when I was asleep..

I wanted to buy some cables from them this morning and tried to arrange a local pickup with cash purchase, they're not doing that. I can't order anything online either, so that was kinda weird. Had an interesting chat with a rep, apparently they're still standing by.

Noticed 3 $1 "pre auth" charges from Apple online store charged to my debit card a little over a week ago. Same card I used to order an hdmi cable from monoprice a couple of months ago. Notified my bank immediately and now have a new debit card.

Coworker of mine got popped as well after shopping at monoprice. I havent shopped there in over 6 months, and my Amex is clear so far.

similar as others, a couple $1 charges to itunes and then they tried to do a buttload of subscriptions to blizzard and sony online entertainment (soe). the fact that they tried a few at the same time is what tipped them off. still one of the last few sites i dont use my amex or amex through paypal and im kicking myself for not changing that awhile back like i did with other online vendors i shop with. but chase has been good to work with and like i said luckily it was caught early; i just wish monoprice would accept responsibility and email everyone who's placed orders in the past couple weeks and let them know to double-check their statements.

I placed an order 2/18 for a couple of cables and so far, I haven't seen any odd charges creep up. Thank god I put the order on a seldomly used credit card, as it will be easy to see anything odd that might pop up.

care to post details?

not sure what, if any, details there are. I got a call from BofA's fraud people. They asked me if I recognized whatever the company was, that is in the Ukraine.

I don't do a lot of shopping for Ukrainian goods, so I have a new credit card on the way.

I just logged into my credit card account and found 3 fraudulent charges.

I checked my other credit cards, and only the one I had previously used at Monoprice has fraudulent charges on it.

I haven't bought anything recently from Monoprice.com, but have used this credit card there is the past, so I recommend anyone who has ever purchased from Monoprice.com check their credit cards for new fraudulent charges.

I had my credit card closed, a new card issued, but they have to send me paperwork to file a claim to contest the fraudulent charges.

I ordered something from Monoprice 4 weeks ago. Monoprice hasn't released any statement saying there was a breach and that you should get a new card number. All they say is that the have had people look into it.

However with all the reports here of fraudulent charges, is there any reason why I shouldn't call my CC and request a new card? I don't want to deal with contesting charges and I dislike now having to log into my bank account every day to see if anything is amiss.

Yes, talking with CSR at Citi, you have to submit a dispute with a mailed in form they send you. Implication: there is no guarantee that they will reverse charge.

Avoid the issue and call your credit card company, and request they cancel that number and issue another one. You do have to be careful about any outstanding balance, any charges that haven't shown up in your account, and risk of late fees / finance charges if you pay off in full each month but next due date is very close.

And I haven't bought anything from Monoprice.com since December 12, 2009. 😡
