Yeah, there are three ways to get send to jail: Land on "Go to Jail", Draw a "Go to Jail" card or roll doubles three times.

As I mentioned, it happens quite often in our games.

MotionMan

Depending on what rules you play, you may get stuck in jail if you cant afford rent. Then you have to sell your shit. If you have no assets or cash and spend more than a couple turns in jail then you are out for good.

The proper way to teach your chillins to play is to teach them to give you their money. There's no use trying to win, they should just hand over all the money at the beginning, saves everyone a lot of time.

LOL. Except I don't win every game.

I am in real trouble when they get older. MyY 7-year-old already knows how to move without having to count out each space.

WTF? That is how you lose the game, not how you get sent to jail!

I hate monopoly, but the times I played I usually try to get the railroads fast. There's cards to send people to them and no one else usually care about them so it's usually pretty easy to get all 4.

You really cannot wait to get what you want, you have to get 85% of what you land on and figure your strategy out from there.

You can trade/sell what you have for what you want though.

Yes, and railroads are typically easy to leverage people to trade, mostly since it's unlikely one person will have more than one. And if you have two, and another two have the others, well you can bust their balls to get them as well. Monopoly is a beautiful game.

I like buying properties to keep others from acquiring all properties in a color suit. Man, that really ticks some people off. :D

Also a good strategy, you can use that single property to leverage huge profits later in the game.
I've had people trade a utility and a railroad for an Oriental Ave...

Err, there's no Boardwalk on a monopoly board. That square would be Mayfair.

:sneaky:

Is there anything Americans do that isn't total fail?

:p

We kick ass at Monopoly because we sell our kids for Reading Railroad and $50.

Also, America invented Monopoly, the properties are named after notable American properties, so Mayfair is a bunch of shit that I wouldn't give $5 for. :p

I always try to get boardwalk. If you can get a person to land on it once or twice, you can usually bankrupt them.

Sure, but if you can't get one get the other. People that just want boardwalk are easy to play.

Whenever I played it seemed like the orange/red corner was always the region of death. If you hit a hotel on one of those it's still a huge hit, and they seem to be hit a lot more than Park Place/Boardwalk ever are.

Every game I've played (something like 20 games) has always gone the exact same way.

Either:

1) Somebody gets both Boardwalk and Park Place. They build up hotels and quickly bankrupt everybody within 10 or so laps around the board.

2) The game goes on forever (3+ hours) and we get bored and stop.

People should take steps to prevent the acquisition of the highest count two property sector, if we played monopoly, we'd probably be done in 2 hours or less :p

1 hour is normal for a quick monopoly game, I've gone 3+ with one or two people with most of the assets. I've only quit those when the others request it. Monopoly is dissatisfying if you're hoping for an outright win. You just need to get to the point where it's pointless for others to play, and guess what, you got a Monopoly!

If I get the light blue and orange properties and put houses on them, I almost never lose.

Everyone in this thread should go silent, so we can continue to win at monopoly.

It's amazing what a business plan will do to your Monopoly game though...

You play with inexperienced players who believe Monopoly is luck.
2) The game goes on forever (3+ hours) and we get bored and stop.

Because, you've never ever played an online game for 3 1/2 hours.

1.) What are the other people doing on the other properties while the person is building houses/hotels at Boardwalk? Why aren't they trying to build houses/hotels at the other properties they own?

2.) That rarely happens when playing online or using the "electronic banking" edition. 3+ hours? I've played Civ4 games that were much longer than that.

I agree with MagnusTheBrewer.
I think the people you play with are incompetent.
I'd love to play both you and the people you play with. You guys can fight over Boardwalk, while I control and monopolize the entire strip on the other side.

Exactly, focusing one one thing will make you an easy target in Monopoly, which is ironic, because a monopoly is the complete control of one thing. Most people that get monopolies in Monopoly have flexibility and the foresight to trade some properties to get a monopoly in another.
