Money saving tips website

I'm not impressed. Looks like this person goes on and on about their philosophy of living within their means, spending wisely, etc. etc. But it strikes me as a waste of time to read that stuff. I already know the basic principles. It's the specifics that count. For that you can go to a newsgroup attended by thousands and take advantage of a pool of intelligence instead of the meanderings at the above-linked site. Go straight to it or do Google Groups searches on the newsgroup misc.consumers.frugal-living on any specific subject and you'll get specific information on subjects of interest. If you have good Google Groups skills, so much the better.

Sounds a lot like the principles discussed in the book, "The Millionare Next Door".

Uh, yeah, but as you know people are very anal about what they feel is an appropriate post in this forum. Almost all the posts are about specific "hot deals," not principles of frugality, etc. etc. It's a whole different paradigm. Not to put down on this forum, nosir. I've found many great deals here, absolutely.

I'd go one further and suggest that hot deals are generally inimical to frugality, since the whole point of rebates, etc. is to get you to buy something that you ordinarily wouldn't be buying. You could get by only using ATHD to find bargains on stuff that you specifically intended to buy, but how many people here do that instead of going "Whoa, that's cheap! I think I'll pick one up! *"

* like my new Dell 2500FPW -- woot.

I can only speak for myself. I do go through phases when I'm a lot more inclined to buy things than other times. But I don't just buy stuff because it seems cheap. I almost always buy things via tips at ATHT when I already intend to buy it. For instance, I'd been looking at 19" LCD's for over a year before I saw threads on the one I bought a couple weeks ago. It's the first one I thought, "yeah, I think that's probably going to work for me." Many other things like that. Sometimes I come here knowing there might be a thread on something like what I want and do searches, for example for CDR blanks, power supplies, DVD+R's.
