that looks like the beginnings of black mold, we had it in our attic, may want to check up there if you have it for moisture. it prolly got onto about 5 8x11 sheets of plywood in our attic and then we just had insurance pay for the removal a long time ago because im pretty sure that is covered under insurance.

then we saved the plywood and cloroxed it and i dunno what we are gunna use it for, but like 20 shets of plywood is nice (redid the whole roof).

and yes our attic was ventilated well, we had a large exhaust fan, and ridge vents so it wasnt like it was supe moist up their or something

Unfortuantly there is not attic - and this is a rental property.

Rental property?

Call the landlord, sit back with some  and watch someone else fix it.

Well I moistened it with bleach water and then wiped it off. Some of the ceiling popcorn came off with it (hopefully not too noticable :p) It cleaned fairly easily.

Use 1:20 bleach:water and spray the mold, and let it sit till the mold disappear (repeat spraying after 15 min if mold still presented after initial application) then wipe with a damp sponge in the bleach:water solution.

Also check your attic/wall as suggested above.

There is no way for me to check anything unfortuantly. I used about half an ounce of bleach to a cup of water, I dipped an old rag in it, moistened the mold spots then wiped them off. I've got a fan on the ceiling there now to dry.

I once lived in rental home and discovered mold in my bed room after a month. The damned landlord didn't do any thing about it, and have the balls to accuse me of being dirty. I was pissed and went into the crawl space and found that there were a slow leak from the main water pipe that enter the house prior to the main shut off vale. Again I reported the problem to the landlord and the a__hole told me that his house was perfectly sound till I muck around with it and broke the pipe. I promptly move out after 3 months of living there and demanded my deposit money back even those I have a year lease, and could have fixed the leak in a jiffy.

Some landlord are a__hole that wouldn?t lift a finger to do the work that they are paid to do.

There must be a source of moisture, and it's likely just above that mold inside the ceiling.
Unfortunately any company you call about it will try to scare you into paying big bucks. Fortunately you are not the owner :p

Here it is :p
Are you in an apartmen or house?
Post a picture from the outside where the mold located if possible. You might be able to locate a stain/damp area on the wall.

It is a brick duplex. The side of the house that this is on is covered with moss and is consistently damp and shady.

Like I said, I pratically live in a swamp humidity wise. . .

The fact that you have a rental means you get on the phone with the landlord and notify him of the problem. Hell, he is there for a reason. If he does not fix the problem soon, it is just going to cost him more money in the long run.

Popcorn ceilings suck. When my wife and I bought our first home, it had popcorn ceilings. Wanted to get rid of it, so we decided to scrape the crap from the ceilings. We did the first room one night, headed back to our old house, showered and went to bed. I felt a little tickle in my throat as I was going off to bed.

Turned into the worst case of Strep Throat my doctor had seen all year. And, instead of giving me penicillin through a shot, the damn S/M doctor gave me the horse pills to swallow. Yes, SWALLOW! That was one week I would never wish on any of my enemies.
