Perhaps because those are not only see the bad sides. They only see the bad brothers, bad chapters. And the only image of the Greek system they have prior to getting into college is "Animal House" and they refuse to change it.

Yep, same here. The friends I have are my real friends that don't require material compensation.

So I take you never joined a club that had dues? Nothing like the ACM, snowboard club, paintball club, intramural sports, etc... If you did, then you were paying for friends there.

Nope, I haven?t belonged to clubs with dues. I tend to find that the frat boys are on the lower end of the mental spectrum anyway; so I wouldn't have much in common with them.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Now that's comedy. ScottyB calling someone else stupid. Judging by what you post on this board, you don't have any room to call a houseplant stupid let alone another college student. Frat boys may be on the lower end of the mental spectrum but you, my friend, are the anchor man.

I have different ideas and morals than most and that makes me stupid? Hmmm, perhaps you should go back to school and learn some more vocabulary words.

Perhaps you should take the opportunity you have while you are in school and learn something, because from where I sit whoever is paying for your college is getting fscked.

Why are all the frat members getting all worked up about the "buying friends" stereotype. I mean, you don't see the "pocket protector wearing" comp. sci. majors trying to disprove that generalization and you don't see the "freak" art and drama majors trying to disprove that one either. I don't see why the Greeks try to prove to everyone that their organization is more than the general stereotype...why are you so concerned about how people see you? Just ignore the comments, roll your eyes if you want to, and move on.

Denial of truth brings out anger as well.

Yes, I was a Theta Chi at Troy State University in Troy, Alabama. Did I have fun? Yes! Would I do it again? No. It was a huge waste of money and my grades suffered horribly because of it. We were proudly the "Animal House" on campus. Our house burned to the ground my Sophomore year, and we moved to on campus housing. That sucked pretty bad, and we never recovered from it unfortunately.

I made some damn good friends, not to mention the girls were cheap and easy. Imagine having chicks come to your house to party just because they heard of the hellacious parties we threw.

I'm not anti-fraternity, but I'm not going to encourage my son to do it. College is not about fraternities & sororities, as much as they like to say they enhance the college experience, most greeks that I knew would have been better students without being a brother or sister of one of them.

Put me down for a yes as being a member, but no if you're asking my advice if you should join or not.

I guess my experience is different from most. Our college didn't have frat houses but the housing office would work it out so members of the same fraternity could be located in a particular wing of a dorm. It was a semi-isolated living area (9 rooms plus a common area). I was dirt-poor in college and no way could I afford to pay dues for a frat.

But one of the frats, knowing I couldn't afford to pay, let me live in their wing (I was the only non-member), attend all the social events, and in essence I was a member in all respects except attending the official meetings. I can see there were genuine advantages - a group who would help each other out when someone was in a bind, people willing to help tutor others who needed it, a sense of "brotherhood" and bonding together. Many of that group stay in touch years later. Yes, there were parties, but there wasn't any sense of wanting to be Animal House material. Since I didn't "pay", I feel my opinion is relatively unbiased.

I think it's like most things - there are good and bad. The bad ones were strictly out for women and drinking, the really good ones were primarily service organizations and not social fraternities.

That fraternity was I Felta Thi. (Not really, it was Zeta Beta Tau.)

Thank you for the honest non-Greek viewpoint. It is much appreciated.

wtf is that supposed to mean? If you're talking about "hell week" or hazing, it's a farce. If someone is intimidated by boy's games, you're a puss anyway. I'm not saying you've got to be a tough guy at all to do those things, but they really are childish and not a big deal.

We went through a weekend of hazing, but it wasn't hard. By the time I was done being a pledge, I knew all the brothers pretty well, and it was hard for me to take them seriously anyway. I did all nasty sh!t they asked me to do, but I've done worse on my own.

OK "Hazing" is NOT a farce it happens and i know it does. i have friends that are in frats at many different schools and the ALL were hazed. Made to go days with no sleep. and eat and do things that if I said would earn me a vacation. If your saying that these things don?t happen you are full of sh!t and you are just pulling the typical frat ass denying technique.

Now if your intimated by these ?Boy Games" as you call them. You are not a pussy. I don?t know about you but I would kill someone before they made me eat a "soggy nacho" or tea bag me. You will loose any appendage that comes that close to my face before I do that sick crap.

And you going to say it bonds the brother together. BULL SH!T! sh!t like that is why people have breakdowns and kill people. Paying hundreds of $$$ for friends who do stuff like that to me for weeks and then all of a sudden are my best friend its the biggest load of crap I have ever heard.

So go have fun with you "Brothers" and eat you soggy nachos. But you can count me and the rest of the decent world out of it

No dumbass, I never said it doesn't happen, I said it's not a big deal, read my post again. Get a life man.

By the way, I spent 14 years in the Army shortly after college. BASIC training and OCS. That's US Government sanctioned hazing, and it made fraternity hazing look like Grandma's tea party. Now go back to your hole and STFU.

I don't even know what it is, but I'm sure it's more talk than anything. I've seen and done some pretty nasty stuff.

EDIT: Okay, I looked it up. I've seen much worse done, but not in fraternities. Hazing in the military is worse than that. Ask any sailor about what happens when they cross the equator for the first time. I forget what it's called, but it happens all the time and has been for hundreds of years.

Sohmer will get pissed off for me mentioning this, but he's been party to plenty of those as a Navy Chief, I'm sure.

teabagging "tee-bah-ging" v. To lower one's scrotum into another's mouth. Person 1: I want to try teabagging. Person 2: You mean, you want ME to try teabagging...

I'm sure if he really wanted to find out, he could have looked it up. No point in spelling something like that out. Sheesh ;)
