PM me if you have to. My floor is debating it as we speak.

I only found this:
The boisterous ceremonies of "crossing the line" are ancient and their derivation is lost. It is well known that ceremonies took place long ago when the ship crossed the equator, as well as other 'lines", such as the 180th parallel, the thirtieth parallel, and also when going through the Straits of Gibraltar. Early ceremonies were rough and to a great extent supposed to try the crew to determine whether or not the novices on their first cruise could endure the hardships of life at sea. The custom then, as at present, is primarily a crew's party.
The Vikings were reported at an early date to carry out these ceremonies on crossing certain parallels. It is highly probable that the present day ceremony was passed on to the Anglo-Saxtons, and Normans from the Vikings. As at earlier times, the ceremonies are carried on to appease Neptune, the mythological god of the seas. Those who have crossed the equator are called SHELLBACKS. These Sons of Neptune compose the cast for the present day ceremonies.

I spend all my money on computers so I don't have enough to buy my friends.
Yep, same here. The friends I have are my real friends that don't require material compensation.
So I take you never joined a club that had dues? Nothing like the ACM, snowboard club, paintball club, intramural sports, etc... If you did, then you were paying for friends there.
Nope, I haven?t belonged to clubs with dues. I tend to find that the frat boys are on the lower end of the mental spectrum anyway; so I wouldn't have much in common with them.

Does it make you feel special bragging about your achievements like this? Frankly, your stats don't mean crap. Numbers acquired in High School are no measure of greatness. Hell, you are not even a true Greek Monkey yet. Come to think of it Frats would love to have a guy like you. You would be one of the ones that keeps the house GPA up.Originally posted by: BowlingNut

Bowlingnut,
Just let it go. Its just another case of the "Haves" vs. the "Have-Nots". The same contempt has been shown for Greek organizations since they appeared on college campuses (1839), so don't expect it to end now. Some of these guys just need to "unplug" as they've obviously sat in their dorm room a few too many times on Friday and Saturday nights in college. That kind of depressing existence can have a lasting impression on the human psychii knowing there are thousands of evil Greeks having a good time and getting some action.
You won't truly understand the value of your fraternity experience until you're competing with these eggheads for the same job, and you get it. When you're schmoozing with executives in your company and entertaining clients at happy hours and that "other" new guy is sitting in the bathroom puking his brains out, you'll value all the "hazing" and 5-day benders you endured in school. Management styles and conflicting personalities won't affect you at work, you've already been through all that. You've endured difficult spans where you got little sleep or were forced to do things you didn't want to and be in places you didn't want to be, so meeting deadlines and working overtime won't even phase you. These are the same qualities that employers look for in new hires, not smart-ass slackers that sit behind their computer screens and play know-it-all.![]()

You are deluded if you think otherwise. You develop much closer relationships with more people than you do living in a dorm or with a couple guys in an apartment. You learn how to govern yourselves, how a decent-sized organization works, business management, and a lot of other things that you sound too closed-minded to even consider. As a fraternity we did a ton of community service and fund raising. Yeah we drank a hell of a lot too.
I'm sure at some schools fraternities suck. At RPI, for the most part only those without social skills didn't join a house.
It still is kinda cute though that you had to "govern" yourselves.
