you mean you didn't think it was neccsary to buy your friends.

Wait...you have to pay to be in a Fraternity?

th only thing i ever had to pay for was money to pay for insurance, pay for food, pay for taxes of owning a house, pay for parties

<----treasurer of the fraternity for a year...learned where all the money went

owning a house is not cheap....

When I joined there were about 40 guys in the house but by the time I graduated there were close to 100. It was still great but not as personal.

Have fun, make friends and don't forget to do well enough in school to graduate :)

I'm from Cornell too, but not an SAE. Graduated in '88

Wow! Look at all the wannabe Martha Burks out there. We're like the Master's, we don't take b1tches either.

Like anything else in life, you pay for certain priveleges. Dues were not an emphasis in my fraternity, nor was social/economic class. However, like any organization, funding was needed to operate. If you didn't want to take part in any social events, you didn't have to pay social dues. If we were having a sorority over for mixer on Thursday night, you could hang out, but you'd just have to provide your own beverages. If you wanted to go to formal, you paid the full amount instead of having it subsidized from your social dues. If you had some type of financial hardship, there were payment plans as well as frat sponsored fundraisers where you "earned" your dues (concessions at UMD and Redskins' football games).

Contrary to popular belief, fraternities offer much more than weekly drinking buddies. In fact, on my campus, the Men's Fraternity GPA was higher than the All Men's GPA. I'm not including academic fraternities, strictly the traditional "social" fraternities. They also provide leadership opportunities that may not be available elsewhere on campus. Having to co-exist with so many similar yet very different individuals broadens your outlook while exposing you to different personalities. Having chicks around constantly was just bonus :D

Obviously my opinion is biased, but I think being Greek maximizes the college experience. But then again, its probably the same reason I look forward to Homecoming as much as Christmas and why the overwhelming % of donations are made to institutions by Greek alum.

Dues? How mcuh were dues?

I just rented a nice house with 3 of my friends in college and had some of the best parties on campus. Never really saw what benefits fraternities offered except some sort of seperatism revolving around random greek letters.

I suppose if you go away to a school where you don't know a soul and have trouble making friends then it may present an easy way to jumpstart a social life....but I always had good luck just talking to the other people in my classes.

Phi Kappa Sigma '99 UCLA.

Unfortunately my chapter went inactive soon after I graduated. All the motivated people graduated with me or the year after I did.

So I take you never joined a club that had dues? Nothing like the ACM, snowboard club, paintball club, intramural sports, etc... If you did, then you were paying for friends there.

Nope, I haven?t belonged to clubs with dues. I tend to find that the frat boys are on the lower end of the mental spectrum anyway; so I wouldn't have much in common with them.

I'll be sure to tell that to one of my brothers who graduated Virginia Tech in Pre-Med with a 3.96 GPA and got a full scholarship to Wake Forest Medical School. Or the other one who graduated with a 4.0 in Finance and ended up working on Wall Street. Or another one that got near a 4.0 in Finance and had the privledge of working in a program at Tech where he managed over a million dollars on Wall Street, real money not bs stock tracking.

Yes, some "Frat Boys" are idiots who go for the drinking and easy access to women. But most of us are "Fraternity Brothers" who are in it for much more than that. I had a few brothers that were straight-edge and didn't drink at all.

Well, I am sure there is a minority of people with a substantial amount of mental capacity and various social inadequacies that forces them into frats; but from what I have seen, this is a very small minority.

Hehe, yeah. All three guys that I mentioned there had absolutely no problem socializing, two of them were very athletic, and only one was rich (one of them paid his own way).

Sorry, don't mean to burst your bubble with the preconceptions you have of fraternities due to watching "Animal House".

I just wonder why is it that the only people who value the Greek system are the ones who are in it? (and yes I realize that is a generalization and I know someone is going to disagree with it)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Now that's comedy. ScottyB calling someone else stupid. Judging by what you post on this board, you don't have any room to call a houseplant stupid let alone another college student. Frat boys may be on the lower end of the mental spectrum but you, my friend, are the anchor man.
