This would be interesting just as an experiment. I have often wondered how pairing an ancient video card with a modern system would be like. Now you can give me the answers!

Actually if all you're wanting to play is standard CS and not CS: Source or any other recent game, the Voodoo3 might be ok provided you can find decent WinXP drivers. I remember getting getting decent FPS (40+) in CS at 1024x768@16bpp with my Voodoo3 2000 a few years ago, and this was with a Pentium 3 800mhz.

you can probably play CS @ 1024x768 or 800x600 fine. HL was made to run on glide and it should still play pretty smooth.

The orgianl couter strike will run just fine on a Voodoo 3 card, but thats about the only 3d game that will.

As will the original Unreal Tournament.

Mmmm, glide..

But just about any A to AAA title released in and after 2000 will not run to satisfaction, if at all.

How will games run? Can I even play CS @ 1280x1024?

BTW, I'm doing this because I'm gonna wait for 7800GT to come out and drop in price, and most likely I'll just wait for the R520 and see how it competes against a 7800GT, then buy the better of the 2 products.

I would like an X800XL, and I have that in my budget, but spending $300 on something thats about to drop off a cliff is not really worth it imo. Thus, I will stick with a Voodoo 3 for now.

Why not get a motherboard with the Radeon Xpress chipset, at least then you'll have something around X300SE speed to use.

BTW, a V3 can run Halflife 2, UT2004, and doom 3 with a patch, but I'd imagine it would be horrible performance. V3 never even had proper WinXP drivers, and for UT2004 I bet software rendering would give better performance than the V3.(V3 does have unofficially XP drivers made by the community though, check guru3d, voodoodrivers, or omega's corner)

A v3 is at least faster than intel extreme graphics 2, and people still game on that.

I say just pay the $500 now at monarch and get a 7800GTX.

Just for sh!ts and giggles, I plopped in my old geforce 4mx into my rig in sig and fired up some games. Doom 3 ran good at 800x600 with no slow downs, but the graphics were horrible. Half Life 2 ran at 1024x768 fast enough, but only with DX7. HL2 looked way better than Doom3 though on the old card. Every other modern game either ran too slow or looked like chit or both.

Those are all Glide enabled games, which means they should run flawlessly at 1024x768 maximum detail. Except some of the games released in 2000 or after 2000, you'll struggle a little. Quake II or Unreal Tournament were practically made for 3dfx cards.

I still have a V3 3500 (the one with built in TV Tuner) on one of my office computers. I still have fonder memories of that card then any other card, it even came with the original UT. It will run Half Life and other games of similar complexity just fine (including the original CS). Running newer games like Far Cry is pretty much out of the question, but I think you could definitely use your V3-2000 for 2d apps and an occasional 3d gaming session just fine while you wait for a better card. Quake 3 will run on it as well.

There was no glide in the original, I believe it just used an opengl mini driver to convert the opengl calls to glide. After 3dfx eventually developed a full OpenGL ICD, I wouldn't be surprised if the mini driver was removed.

BTW, try running ut2004, I honestly think an X2 could run it better in software mode than in 3d accelerated mode with the voodoo3. UT2004 is a multithreaded game, so it'd even get some use out of the dual cores!(albeit the 2nd thread is only for sound)

well on my 300MHz celeron with no L2 cashe, the old version ran flawlessly, but the steam version was like 5fps and took forever to load or do anything. cs on steam only has OGL, DX, and software. minigl is gone.

Well, the problem is I need a PCI or PCI-e card. If I dish out money for a PCIe card it will be too much and I can't afford a 7800GT =(.

Bleh.. decisions decisions. I cut out 2GB ram just to make room for dual core, and I cut out a good sound card and speakers to go from 6600GT to kickass graphics.

How will the drivers run for Voodoo 3?

BTW this config will score lower than my Dothan 745 w/ Radeon 9000.. lafff.. Actually wtf. I'd be better off gaming on my laptop huh =P

Great graphics aren't always that important... I'd take that above setup with a Vodoo 3 over a slower system with a 7800GTX anytime :) Well, that's just my personal preference since the ONLY game I play is Starcraft XD

best option is buy a 9500 pro for $60 on ebay, it will last you the time you want before the 7800s come down in price, probably 6 months or so. then you can resell that 9500pro for the same amount. the 9500pro should be able to get you 40+ fps at that resolution. the voodoo ran the 1st cs just fine with opengl, something cs source doesn't use. cs source only uses directx. You may receive 20fps or so at the lowest resolution if your lucky, with all graphic settings at the lowest(i.e. no shadows). i didnt upgrade my voodoo3 until i upgraded to my 1.3ghz, which i thought was late enough.

that game will never die :D

Not a chance of running 1280x1024. It might not run ANY games from the last few years because of directx/driver support.

Edit: I just built a computer for my uncle and stuck my old geforce 256 ddr in it. It actually runs 3dmark01 pretty well, but it won't play any newer games because of the ancient directx support. MAN that card gets HOT too.

ya know, instead of the Voodoo 3 you could just have a cartoonist draw each frame as you play. Slight exaggeration but you won't be able to game either way and at least the cartoonist will be some entertainment.

I still wanna see some UT2004 benchies! Come on, show us software versus 3d rendering!

I know on my sister's laptop with an 800mhz Duron(64KB L2 cache!, 100mhz SDR ram!) and the original Rage Mobility chip, all games run faster and less buggy on the cpu than on the graphics chip, even after I downloaded some hacked drivers which were semi recent.
Ut2004 and the original halflife both ran faster without 3d acceleration. Still, a major mismatch on the gpu and cpu there, but with an X2 I wouldn't be surprised to see everything slower than a Geforce 4 TI to act as a 3d decelerator.
