Modern games with a Voodoo 3 2000

I'm getting a new system:

Athlon 3800+ X2 if not 3700+ SD core, 1gb memory blah blah blah.. you know a pretty damn nice system...

EXCEPT I'm sticking in my Voodoo 3 2000 PCI in.

How will games run? Can I even play CS @ 1280x1024?

BTW, I'm doing this because I'm gonna wait for 7800GT to come out and drop in price, and most likely I'll just wait for the R520 and see how it competes against a 7800GT, then buy the better of the 2 products.

I would like an X800XL, and I have that in my budget, but spending $300 on something thats about to drop off a cliff is not really worth it imo. Thus, I will stick with a Voodoo 3 for now.

That's retarded. At least get a friggin 5200 for like $30 or whatever. It'll still suck, but at least you'll get more than 4fps at 640x480.

Your Voodoo 3 would struggle running 640X480 minimum settings on games 4 years ago, nowadays, you will not be gaming at all on that. Get something along the lines of an X600 Pro would do just fine for you.

Why would you spend that much on a CPU and have a $2 video card?

I dun get it!

You'll wait for it to drop in price, then new cards will come out, and you will say the same thing....

Right now x800xl best bang for the buck, I havn't tried Doom3/BF2 yet, but on half-life 2/CS : S/UT2004 I am running at max resolution and full settings and I am getting 0 lag.

So true. You would be better off just getting the best you can right now.

Ya, I think he should just go for the best bang for the buck, I don't think the 7800 will drop in prices anytime soon.

Get one of the Turbo Cached/hyper memory cards so you can play your games on 800x600 at least.

i tried that once. 3 years ago i built an athlon 1700+ and i was waiting for my GF3 Ti500 to ship, so i only had a 4mb S3 virge PCI in my computer. the speed isn't bad, but the graphics were horrid, playing counter strike.

but yeah grab something cheap meanwhile... some $30 video card should be better than the voodoo.

Why get a "pretty damn nice system", and throw your old voodo 3 in it? Why don't you get a pretty damn average system, and get a better graphic card with the money you save?

Even with sli on the voodoos, you would still get absolute retarded levels of FPS and thats at lowset quality and lowest res

May I point that you won't be able to run many games at all, simply because drivers haven't been updated in 5-6 years (3dFX tanked)

I have money for an X800XL. I have $300 there.

If I would wait, it's for the 7800GT. If 7800GTX prices can drop to $491 at Dell, then don't you think I could grab some deal for the 7800GT and possibly see it drop to $300?

Each generation is like a year or more. I wouldn't say wait for the G80 or whatever. It's just that we're so close to the G70/R520 age that it's kinda not worth it to jump in on X800XLs...

It would be slow and ugly. I was in shock at how integrated graphics were a heck of a lot faster and better looking than the old v3-2000 (which I had). And this was in 2003...

if you wait for the 7800GT to come out, then maybe ATI has already announced the plan for something faster to due out, then you'll decide to wait for that, then nvidia announces the 8700 or whatever quad SLI.... you get the drill

you'll end up playing games with your voodoo3 for a while. grab a 6600GT or something, and sell it when you have more money for a bigger beast.

There ya go, snag up a cheap 6600GT on the forums until the price drops on whichever card you're waiting for.
