I'm kinda curious how you phrase a conversation with a stranger's mother using a number found on the internet...

"Hi, is this Pat's mother?"
"Yes?"
"My name is Harvey, I'm a moderator for a PC tech forum and your son was asking us to help use a stolen computer from his local school"
"What the hell is a forum? Who are you? Don't call me again *click*"
 
At least if we got enough of the conversation with the mom to prove it was the right kid. An open wireless network, and knowledge of who lives in a house and this could be any neighbor, or ...
