I'm trying to switch over to Win2K professional, but I can't get my modem to work in it. The setup guide hints that it should work, but doesn't say it. It says that the instructions are for Win95/98 instalation, but in the minimum requirements it lists Win2K, so I don't even know if it will work in it. I'm about ready to pull my friggin hair out. It's a good modem, US Robotics, Win2K has lots of drivers for this brand, but not this one. I install the drivers from the CD, and it says that there is an error. Okay. It's a PCI modem. In my Win98 setup it calls the slot I have it in COM2. In Win2K it will only install it in COM1. It doesn't even recognize COM2, and I can't get it to. COM1 is a serial port and I can't very well put a PCI modem on that. If you think you can help I will give more info, I'm just so frustrated right now that I can't explain this well I'm affraid. By the way I checked and there is no updated driver. I just bought this modem new a couple of weeks ago and it was $100, so I'm pretty upset that it apparently is incompatible with Win2K. Anyway if you think you can help please do. Thanks.

Might help if you let us know at least which modem you're talking about.

Okay. It is a U.S. Robotics 56K Internet Call Modem. The numbers 1.024.2424.00 appear on the manual. There is a sheet of paper telling how to install it while the manual is almost entirely dedicated to plugging the Net2Phone software that comes with it so it is not much help.

Suggestions:

#1. Run the install New Hardware Wizard- Hopefully this will find a new com port. If it does then run the install NHW again and it should find the modem. As for Device Drivers- dwnld the NT DDs and point the wizard to the inf that you dwnlded. I know that the NT4 drivers should not work but I have a USR x2/56K ISA modem on my server that installed that way.

#2 Disable the Serial port in the BIOS and then see #1. That will tell you if the modem is PNP to Com 1 for some reason...

Let me know if it works- IF not then I will look in my install logs for the 56K modems and W2K and see what I can find.

Thanks a lot. I'll try that. I also emailed U.S. Robotics soI'll see what they have to say. I hope I get it working.

Thanks for all the advice but there is no way I can make the system detect this modem. I got word back from U.S. Robotics that this model is not supported under Win2K. However it clearly lists Windows 2000 in the minimum requirements. I am going to write them back and express my annoyance, this was afterall a $100 dollar modem. Do you think I have any chace of getting another modem out of them, or at least a discount on another one? This is really starting to bother me, I really want to switch over because Win98 is starting to suck big time, and I can't because my brand new modem won't let me. ARGGGG! I guess I'll see.
