<< I'm on cable now, but when I was on dialup I got around 51K on one ISP and 57K on another. >>

Really? Um, no, 57k isn't possible. 56k remember?

53k here usually. Sometimes I only get 50 even.

BTW, that is on K-Mart Blue Light dial-up, which costs about ten bucks a month.

<< What is this "modem" you speak of? ;) >>

Modem, or "mow dem" refers to the speed of your lawn mower...IE: "mow dem ova"

I swear. I can't remember who it was...but someone was in my room with me once when I connected and saw it. Don't ask me how...but I connected at that speed. If you believe me or not.....doesn't matter.

I use cable now, but before, I had been connecting with a momem for a long time, during which my connection performance varied greatly.

Sometimes I would get nice 52K connections, but most of the time I got anywhere from 48 to 26. And the connections never lasted more then a few minutes.

And that was with a high-end external modem, too! :|

it's probably reporting the speed at which your modem is connected to your computer. the serial port itself maxes out at 115kb/s

before i got cable i was connecting at 56667 on aol, thats pretty close to that 57k that is "impossible". I know all the adds and crap say that "current regulations limit connection speeds to 53k and crap like that, and i know i was using a 56k modem on a regular phone line, but that's what i was getting.

What's a modem? Is that like a fractional T1?

Actually the FCC has limited analog phone connections to 53.3kbps (kilobits), so there's no way you could've gotten 57K.

Ahhh... the good old Dial-Up days!
I was lucky to get over 40k here, until I got Cable!
2.0Mb down/128k up!

The US government limits the throughput to 53k on regular phone lines, so even on a 56k modem you will never connect any higher than 53333. Ever. It has something to do with interference I believe, someone else likely knows more on the subject but I know what i've said is 100% correct.

That's about what I get all the time. Certainly not bad, but..

Yeah, you're correct. But how do you know he's not from another country, where they don't have such restrictions? :) some modems certainly can connect at 57kbps. And yeah, Windows was reporting your serial port speed, not your modem speed. This was probably due to the default initialization string. Look in your manual for the AT command to tell it to report DTR speed..

Oh, and there is a way to enable a serialport speed of 230400, but I don't remember how.. heh
