Modem Mystery

I can't get my friend's modem to work. She doesn't have it's drivers and I can't figure out which model it is. I need to find the drivers for the damn thing, so if anyone can help, please do.

It's a PCI card with a Motorola chip (that has this codes printed on: 62412-51 / U52024.2-0.6 / 0007). In the back side there's a sticker saying Model No.: A-SM56 TP AC.

I tried to use Motorola's SM56 Drivers, but it won't work (error 630). My friend said to me she always used some drivers that came w/ the MoBo (it's a SiS 630 renamed to GFXCel), but they only install a driver for a HSP56 MicroModem, and Windows adverts me that the driver isn't made for the device I'm using it with.

This may be a BIOS config problem, I took a look at it and there's a lot of Integrated Peripherals (Modem, Video, Audio, Ethernet). I don't know if I have to enable the onboard Modem in order for the PCI Modem to work.

The system has Windows Millenium installed.

Go to this link.. I think you might have to download the AC-link drivers (I'm assuming that's why it says AC in the product code) for the correct OS and chipset (Sis is what you mentioned)..

For example, if you were running Win95/98, you'd get these drivers from the link above (you'd have to scroll and search) or the direct link below:

AC-Link (Intel/Via/SiS chipsets for MR/MDC/CNR cards)
Download a single file to the PC desktop.
Build 84.42

Let us know which OS you use, but if it's Win95/98, try the drivers in the above link..

I already did that, DN, and it didn't work. That's why I'm not ruling out that this may be a BIOS config problem...

I'm using Windows Millenium.

Well, I installed the modem in my rig (it has Windows XP installed) and the modem was recognized as Smart Link 56K Modem. I downloaded the drivers available at Smart Link's site (www.smlink.com) and installed in my friend's computer. For the first time it installed without any warnings, and everything seemed to work allright. But it doesn't.

Using tone dialing the modem seems to dial more numbers than there is to it, and switching to pulse dialing will solve the problem. But now I can't connect, it will enter into loop when handshaking, and won't connect.

Any thoughts?

1) you have to know exactly what modem you have, how would you be able what drivers you need otherwise ?

If you know what model.....try to flash the lastest bios for this modem...and get the right drivers and install it.

2) check your dialup settings. I doesnt sound like a driver problem when the modem dials to much numbers...rather than a problem with your dialup settings/entries.

In case you have the latest bios, drivers for the *right* modem...and it still doesnt work....throw it away and get another modem for $20....

Check your network (tcp/ip) settings.....if it connects and you are stuck in a loop it looks like something in your network tcp/ip settings is screwed up...dns-servers.....network protocol...compression....i dont know.....

I agree. It appears that you've already put over $20 of "sweat" labor into this
modem. Go out and get a $20 Lucent WinModem......or......
CompuGeeks has an external hardware SuprExpress modem for $22...........
