I was shocked the first time they quoted me $30 for the Mobile 1 Oil Change. Up until then I'd been going to the local mobil station where it was $45-55 (been a while since I've been there). They gave coupons on your next visit, so, price was always a bit different.

Jiffy Lube and some of the other quick change places don't do Mobil 1. And I'd rather not get my hands dirty OR have to cart around dirty oil to the recycler.

The only problem with wally world is they are SLOW. 2 Cars in front and it'll be 1.5hrs before your car is ready, and there's only so much shopping I can do inside walmart. Of course, I could shop for a little bit, and then go through the front checkouts, just the line there will kill .5hr easy.

Tip: Walmart didn't sell synth filters (maybe they do now?), so, if you prefer your own brand you can bring it w/ you and they'll credit you back the cost of their filter and use yours.

I just purchased a nissan altima, and I was told there is no such thing as a break in period anymore because the engine is manufactured to such fine specs nowadays. In fact, my first oil change is scheduled for 3700 miles!

Don't flame, I'm just the messenger. I was surprised too. I pictured myself in my mind as an old man, with my pants around my chest chastising a youngster "I remember when we made crappy cars that you had to drive slow when you first got it, and get an oil change after 1000 miles!"

you think 3700 is something...

I have a 2002 Audi A4 and it calls for an oil change every 10,000 miles.

I'll be bringing in some Mobil 1 when I go for the service.;)

I don't doubt it. The newest vehicle that I own is a 1997, so I wouldn't know. ;)

Seriously, with the advancements of engineering, primarily due to computers, you can manufacture stuff much quicker and to much tighter tolerances than before. Has anybody noticed the number of cool new cars and how quickly they hit the market after being a show car? With computers, they can get all the R&D done in a fraction of the time that they used to be able to.

Newer cars are also a lot more efficient and burn a lot cleaner, that's why I'm not surprised to see the higher mileage intervals between oil changes. I'd still change my oil a lot sooner if the car sat around a lot and you weren't using synthetic oil. Quality of oil has nothing to do with how the car is put together or how clean it burns.

Anyway.. There may not be such of thing as break in any more, but I always go through some sort of break-in routine within the first 500-1000 miles just to be safe. I also wouldn't use synthetic oil when the car is brand new either because I still believe in the break in cycle. Maybe I'm a dinosaur, but I can't believe that something doesn't have to be broken in to some extent.

OTOH.. Some Porsche's (if not all Porsche's) come from the factory filled with Mobil 1 synthetic, so maybe it is ok to put synthetic in a brand spanking new car? It's certainly worth looking into.

I use a quart of Rislone in place of one quart of oil at oil change time, 3,000 miles with filter. I have never had an engine problem in any new/used car, several of which we put well over 100,000 miles on. Rislone coats the vital parts and does not drain off so everything stays lubricated at start-up. It sells for $2.75-3.00 at Walmart, K-Mart, and just about any major parts store. I once had a Fiat 128 and put Mobil One in it around 1979 when it first came out and the engine leaked like a sieve from that day on.

smu2000 Sorry, not trying to rip on your particular ride, it looks approximately 9999x better than the rice burners with coffee can exhausts and 100 stickers for mods that don't exist for the car. Given the ride, I'd be apt to be cautious (as others have said) in letting a Wal-Mart employee get anywhere near it. You've covered the fact that you were close by while they did it, and that's fine for one time. However, unless you are gushingly nice, you may very quickly get a "reputation" at Walmart as being "that guy that always looks over my shoulder while I'm changing his oil" -- aka "when I see him drive up, I'm going to shift into super slow mode so that he has to wait as long as possible". Consider whether its worth the hassle of 1. waiting in line at walmart and 2. dealing with walmart employees and customers (ugh) vs. spending a few more dollars, probably break even timewise, but know that it was done right. Guess I'm just playing devil's advocate :)

Those of you who switched to synthetic, did you guys follow the Oil Bible and do a "flushing" first? I recently spent some major $$ to fix a leak in my car. Not sure if it had anything to do with me switching to synthetic a few months prior. It's been a good 6 months. Anyway, the repair place put back in regular old Castrol 10W30. Just wondering if I should try synthetic again. Don't want the seals to break again though..

Where's the deal? I get oil and filter changes at the TOYOTA DEALERSHIP for $20. And it's guaranteed to be done in 30 minutes or it's free.

And what's up with changing the oil if 3500 miles, you're supposed to get one every 2,000 miles

I once had a Fiat 128 and put Mobil One in it around 1979 when it first came out and the engine leaked like a sieve from that day on.

I had a Fiat 128, never had to change the oil, the engine acted as a filter:(. The car also went through front wheel bearings every 10K miles:(:(.

But to the point -
Oil change - X quarts/liters/gallons - $7
Quality filter - $7
Tools are only bought once,( I use a pipe wrench) $1
Chance to inspect the under carriage, inside of the tires, do the manly thing - Priceless
I've had about 11 autos/vans and 3 motorcycles. Although I don't drive much commuting now (1.5 miles IF I drive) family trips etc. put on the miles. ALL the vehicles since 1975 have gone about 100K or more (except the Fiat).
1 rule - change oil and filters frequently - oil usually every 3 to 5K miles.
For me synthetic oil isn't worth it, both for price and peace of mind. For instance my Ford 7.3 L diesel - 105K, probably about 25 or more oil changes. Oil rated GOOD by blackstone.

/edit - how the heck did it all turn up in italics ?
/edit - sorry for the italics
Peace of mind.
If your vehicle is your baby, change it frequently, and feed it well.

As you can see, I'm very pro Synthetic. In addition to actually working better, it's a lot "greener" too because you aren't using petroleum products. I also run at extended drain intervals, so I use less oil and that's definitely a good thing.

i agreed with everything (pretty much) except that

why would syntehtic's be greener, they are still petroleum products; they still cauze cancer, they still are a bitch to dispose of

richd111, same thing on a Maxima (3,750 mi service interval). BTW, the dealer recommended 87 octane. No way! Go with premium if your manual says so.

Salvador, the only break-in is no hard accelaration, driving at contsant speeds for long intervals, etc. for the first 1,000. Personally, I would change the oil after 1,000... It's only ~$30 for your peace of mind.

All new Porsches come with Mobil 1 because they are meant to be driven hard ;-)

unknown, 12k mi + on a BMW before the service light came on :)

mra, go with the manuf's recommendation. If Toyota says 2,000, then 2,000 it is. BTW, I think it was Toyota that had a problem with engine sludge a couple of years ago. If you go over the recommended oil change period, debris buildup in your oil will collect in the engine cavities and may even clog certain areas. Even though the engine sludge problem was the owners' fault, Toyota repaired the engines under warranty. Again, I THINK it was Toyota.

Rallispec, all the Nissan dealerships I've gone to use regular oil, not synthetic.

Edit: fixed bold tags

(5 quarts would run you about 25, 20 if its on sale, if someone can point out a cheaper source, feel free to post
Check with your local Wal-Mart in their oil section fo the store. You should be able to find a 5-quart container of Mobil1 oil for only $17.77.

In regards to Costco, I thought they charged $23 and change for 6 quarts. Is this price still correct at Costco?

Thanks!

Just my 2 cents about this topic. A member of my family works for Mobil in the lubes division and he says I should only change my oil every 10,000-15,000 miles. In fact, I read somewhere that 20,000-25,000 is about where you need to change it with Mobil 1. These numbers reflect the fact that Mobil 1 is vastly superior to mineral oil because instead of being dead dinosaurs it starts from ethylene (ok that comes from dead dinos but it's much more pure.) Even for regular, mineral oils you should only change your car every 5,000+ miles, with few exceptions. The 3,000 miles/change number reflects a sort of worst case scenario, which basically is for people that live in desert areas and get a lot of dust and such in the oil.

Check Super Walmart.. when on sale (usually 2x a year) they have 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 Full Synth for ~$16.76. I have (8) 5 quart jugs of 5W-30 and (10) 5 quart jugs of 10W-30 Mobil 1 Full Synth oil in my garage right now :)

Thanks for the post, it's a good deal for the full oil change!

This is very common for "older"/higher mileage cars that have lived on dyno their whole lives. The synthetic actually cleans and lubes the gaskets and seals. Unfortunately, when that happens on older/higher mileage cars, it cleans out gunk that was previously helping seal :)

So when it cleans the gunk out, obviously the synthetic begins to leak out :) This same scenario helped me finally convince a good friend to tear down his engine and rebuild/restify it.

vacuum interior
windshield cleaning
tires aired up

Cost me like 55 with Firestone and Honda just for the oil change and tire service.

My local walmart always has something like $17 for a 15 point service. Or maybe not including the cleaning part, but I get windshield cleaned for free whenever I use Raceway Gas station.
