But at this point the genre is stale for jaded vets like me. No developers are doing anything different besides changing/refining the window dressing. For someone new to MMOs, you must be like a kid in a candy store like all the wide-eyed goobers who are spazzing over WoW like it's something other than a direct clone of DAOC.

It's a bad time to get into MMORPGs. What you'll be playing right now is a bunch of formulaic and boring level-grinding faux-"PvP end game" games. What you want to do is build yourself a time machine and go back to 1998 and play UO. That was a triumphant era for a then beautiful game before EA bought Origin and proceeded to systematically destroy the game.

Either build a time machine or wait for 3+ years when the EQ clone MMORPG market is completely saturated and it becomes profittable for someone to make a 3D UO97 clone. Then you'll have a game worth wasting your time on.

Got to pretty much agree with you, even though I have played 2 MMO's, they pretty much feel the same for me.

I really want to play a very immersive hard scifi MMORPG, EVE Online looks pretty good. How is SWG?

Like I have said I host a Free! MMORPG! If you want to try it out it is http://www.foreveruntold.com
Download the Client and all the GFX Updates, unzip the GFX Updates into the GFX Folder subfolder of the Game Folder.
Create a new account, fill in user name password and choose your race.
When first starting all you can choose from are the following:
Templar: "Weak in magic but physically strong"
Harakim: "Strong in Magic but physically weak"
Mercenary: "All around"
Then start Game... There are plenty of players who would be willing to help new players out. There are 11 Admin/Staffers and usually at least one is on.... Have Staffers from differant parts of the world to cover differant time zone....
Trying to build a bigger player base, the game will never be a pay to play and the downloads will always be free.
Besides my Free MMORPG, there are several other free ones on the internet. I think it would be cool if I could get some ATOT members to try out my server but I'm not going to twist anyones arm. :)

It's still the best MMORPG that my friends or I have played out of the following (DAOC, Everquest, WWII Online, Asheron's Call 2).

It's all about the monthy updates/story lines/events. :)

Definitly the best ever, or at least my first. Haven't played in a long time though.

I used to play DAoC then tried SW:G. Went back to DAoC for a while and then dropped it too. I don't have the time to play.

I've played them all, including WoW.

Asheron's call is still the best in my eyes. :)

Here's a video of basically a carbon copy of my journey in Asheron's Call, played from beta(video covers beta) until the end of the video. Around 3-4 years?

Video LINK

I'm sure this will bring back some memories for the other retired AC players. ;)

I'll check it out Megadeth but I can't promise anything. I'm mostly looking for scifi but free may be too good to pass up.

If you dont Like the Game I am hosting, you can at least look back and know you didnt spend any money on it.

I promised myself after I got addicted to EQ that I'd never get into another MMORPG. And I never will.

I can't play a game like that casually. It consumes me.

Been free of EQ about a month now. Near the end, the only thing that could hold my interest in the game was client-side hacking. Speaking of which, I still have EQ installed on one of these machines. Think I'll go free up those 2 gigs of space.

Played EQ for four years or so, watched Sony kill it... Playing & loving WoW now, though there are times I wish it was more in-depth, notably in relation to tradeskills and the end-game - though it's early yet, we'll see what they do.

I've played EQ, DAoC, and FFXI.

DAoC was probably my favorite, but eventually I just got bored of them all. haven't touched an MMORPG since the FFXI disappointment.

I've played Asheron's Call 2, Shadowbane, DAoC. I've beta tested SWG, WoW and Guild Wars. I was really into DAoC. I would probably still be playing it but Trials of Atlantis pretty much killed the game for me. If you didn't have ToA gear you was pretty much useless in the frontiers. :(

This is why I haven't even bothered to play a MMORPG. I refuse to pay anywhere from $30-$50 for the game and another $10/month to play.

Yeah... the monthly fee kills it. I understand why they have to charge, but really now... it does not take $10-$15 a month PER PERSON to run a server.

beta'd WoW, and it was great. Luckily, I'm so cheap I'll never pay a monthly fee to play a game.

I'm sure they don't charge $10-15/month because that's what it takes to run a server.....they charge it because they can. People will pay it, so they'd be stupid to not charge it. Once people stop paying every month to play the game, I think free online play would reappear. But alas, that is only something I can hope for.

Depends on how big you are....
I run my own server from my home...
I pay the Electric bill that keeps the server going, the bill for the ISP that keeps it connected and the House payment to have some place to store the server... Not to mention buying parts for the server for upgrades...
Here's a big one, all the time put into building new areas and adding to the source code. I've spent 8 hour days (Weekends when not at work) just adding to my MMORPG. That's my time going in to this to keep my players happy with new quests ect.... The ultimate goal one day is for Me and teh rest of the Dev team to start work on a better Engine and differant game all together... One that we would end up charging a monthly fee.
You also have to think that these big companies that have Wow and EQ also have a team of Programmers (highly paid Im sure), Graphics designers, Tech Support.... They have high costs. They can't exactly make a profit if your playing the game for free.

Does it really cost the cable company $75 a month per household to provide cable TV?

some of my friends played it for 2 months or so and liked it untill the grind got into it

eve on the other hand, I have been a subscriber for 1 and 1/2 years, still playing, getting kinda bored with it though, but the new additions that are always coming along with the community keeps me interested

tried WoW briefly, never liked it. started playing mabinogi and hooked to it like i was with no other game. i would love to check out MOEpic (short for Master of Epic), but that would require more time spent in learning the language :(
