As a Brewers fan, I'm quite disappointed in the end result of this series. Living in NYC and not being particularly fond of the Yankees just makes it that much worse.

As a Yankee fan, i am feeling the Mets fans pain right now. It sucks, but there is always next year.

Maybe it's just me, but while this loss obviously sucks, I'm still proud of my Mets. I have yet to be spoiled by the expectation that they'll get to the playoffs every year. Hell, this is the team that I stood by through many pitiful seasons, so the fact that they made it so far, so quickly after years of sucking, still is a big deal for me.

No Bonilla, Alomar (not Sandy) or Mo Vaughn here. 🙂

im upset, but not too bad...before the end of the season I said that not making the world series would be a dissappointment, which it is, but when I said that we had a rotation of Pedro, El Duque, Glavine, Maine/Traschel....not Maine, Glavine, Traschel, Perez....so cant get too upset

although pitching wouldnt have helped today as we did fine in that department

By buying tons of high priced free agents, Yankee style. I can't tell how happy I am that they LOST.

Oh give it a rest that argument is so OLD and so TIRED.

Besides, you can't "buy" a free agent, you can only sign them. I have yet to see any baseball player "sold" to a team or organization.

Why bring up Floyd, when the smart decision is to move the runners over with a bunt??

yep, I guess Willie had one of his hunces that Floyd would end it Kirk Gibson style....it was a bad call, but he had so many great random calls this posteason, what u gonna do?

Its a tough call either way. If they pinch hit and the guy pops up the bunt, then Willie gets killed for not putting Floyd up there.

Perhaps if you followed baseball more closely, you'd realize the Mets have been buying high-priced free agents for many years (the luxury of NY being a baseball town), and it hadn't amounted to jack until now.

😀

disappointed in the Mets hitting for sure, you are not going to win many games by scoring one run.

very pleased with the pitching performance which bodes well for next season, especially Maine and Perez

Either team would have been massive underdogs against Tigers, their starting rotation has been mowing down everyone in their path.

Off season musts - a young hard throwing pitcher, a real second baseman (return Valentin to bench), a left fielder (if we offload Milledge)

I think the mets got lucky and were hang gliding all the way through the series. Pitchers and catchers made bad decisions. They threw their worst pitches during timely at bats. The home rome in the 9th off a hanging high-in-the-zone change up was when the mets luck was up.

Oh well. Mets need a closer and maybe some more relief picthing. Though it all depends on how the whole team plays that matters most. That's what's sad. Who the hell knows how well a team plays next season?

Mets need a closer? Who is that Billy Wagner fellow in the bullpen?

The guy who lost the confidence of his manager I guess.

Really? Did you even watch the game? It was a tie game and Heilman pitched lights out the inning before. Why would you burn your closer in a tie game when you have a strong arm in the game already and can use him for another inning?

It wasnt a save situation, and you dont automatically bring your closer into a tie game in the 9th.

Automatically, no. But in an elimination game a lot of mangers would throw their top guy out there for 2 innings and hope for a run.

Exactly. A lot of managers would. A lot of managers would also have brought in the lefty against the lefty yesterday. Willie didn't and it worked for him that time.

That doesn't mean that the Mets need a closer. They didn't lose this series becuase of lack of a closer, they lose becuase they didn't get timely hitting.

I didn't say they needed another closer 😕

I was merely responding to the "who is that Billy Wagner fellow in the bull pen" question 😉

The World Series is over and now the off season begins for all the major league clubs. The Hot Stove won't really start to heat up until the winter meetings in December but lots of players are now filing for free agency.

So far 7 players from the 2006 Mets have file for free agency:

Jose Valentin
Michael Tucker
Ricky Ledee
Cliff Floyd
Orlando Hernandez
Steve Trachsel
Chris Woodward

From that list I would only bring back Orlando Hernandez if he would come back on the cheap. I love Cliff Floyd and he's a gamer but he just never stays healthy so I let him walk (unless of course he gives the mets a super home discount which he wont). Floyd should really consider being a DH. I think he would excel in that role as his bat when he's healthy can still be lethal. The others are goners as the Mets must improve the bench. Valentin wants to play full time but I think the Mets need a younger, more long term solution for second base. As for Steve Trachsel..he is gone forever. Good riddence.

In other Mets news:

Pedro Martinez is ahead of schedule after rotator cuff surgery..this news from rotoworld (via the Boston Herald)

Pedro Martinez is ahead of schedule in his rehab from rotator cuff surgery, and could return to action before the All-Star break next season.

The word from associates close to Mets starter Pedro Martinez is that the three-time Cy Young Award winner is ahead of schedule in his rehab from rotator cuff surgery, and that he could return to action ahead of schedule, meaning before the All-Star break next season. Former Red Sox doctor Bill Morgan and Mets doctor Richard Altchek used an innovative technique during the surgery in which they reattached portions of Martinez? shoulder in such a way that he would not lose flexibility, allowing him to retain full range of motion once his recovery is complete. His velocity should also improve upon the mid- to high-80s fastball he was throwing last summer. Although the surgical technique may not have been available five years ago, this procedure repaired the same tear in the rotator cuff that Martinez developed in the middle of the 2001 season with the Red Sox. Martinez, fearing that the operation would turn out as disastrous to his career as it proved for his brother Ramon, opted for rest and rehab instead.

Guillermo Mota was suspended for 50 games effective next season for violating the drug policy. He was a free agent and I figured the Mets would pick him up thus making Heilman tradeable. Guess Aaron will be sticking around unless the Mets get some great offer for him as Aaron still wants to start.

Mota suspended 50 games

paper talk today is the Mets are going after Willis, possibly for Heilman & Milledge

also interesting to read the Braves may be shopping Giles around

Braves general manager John Schuerholz said the Braves might be involved in one or more transactions this week. San Diego and Cincinnati are among teams interested in second baseman Marcus Giles. The Padres have a setup reliever the Braves covet, Scott Linebrink. The Braves are in the market for a setup man along with a left-handed reliever, and have also inquired about starting pitchers.

would be an awesome addition to the Mets, plugging a hole at 2nd. always been a thorn in Mets side, good bat and good speed. Can't see them doing business with a rival though....

new stadium called Citifield...man thats gonna suck...i cant imagine calling it that

You just know you'll hear "shitifield" if the team does poorly or something. $20 mil per year goes to Wilpon's pocket which is fine and dandy for him. Guess it could be much worse but I wish they had a secondary name that is Mets related to call the place... sorta like "Bob Murphy Park at CitiField"..something like that.

Valentin signs a one year, $3 million deal. I guess thats ok. They are hoping to strike lightning in the bottle again with him but I would prefer and young alternative to stick around for a few years.

The Padres and Mets swapped four role players Wednesday, with San Diego sending relief pitcher Jon Adkins and reserve outfielder Ben Johnson to New York for relievers Heath Bell and Royce Ring in a deal between NL division winners.

Adkins was 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA in 55 games last season, mostly pitching in middle relief and setup spots. Johnson, the Padres' minor league player of the year in 2005, hit .250 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 120 at-bats.

eh..its one of those "lets trade our junk" kind of deals. Nothing special all around but I think Bell and Ring will get a better chance over in San Diego to be a part of the pen all year round.

Ben Johnson put up great minor league numbers but poor numbers in the majors but the potential is there for a quality 4th outfielder. I don't know about Adkins.

Also, that El Duque deal was for almost $12 million. Thats quite a bit but when healthy El Duque can still pitch great under a pressure situation in NYC and thats worth something.

Glavine still has to make up his mind (the whole stay with Mets or go back to Braves deal) but the Braves are not gonna pay him anything at this stage of his career unless he comes at a deep discount. I think he'll stay a met.

Mets sign Moises Alou for one year/$7.5 million plus an option year. eh.. guess thats fine since its only a year plus if he stays healthy he can be that righty power bat the Mets need to balance out the lineup. Wonder what this does to Lastings Milledge.

Mets made a minor move with the Marlins.

Mets acquired LHP Jason Vargas and LHP Adam Bostick from the Marlins for RHP Matt Lindstrom and RHP Henry Owens.

That's a lotta dough for a 40 year old, but I guess that's why it's a 1 year deal.
He did have a good year last year though.

what the heck is taking Glavine so long to make his mind up???

longer it drags on, I suspect he's leaning towards returning home to Atlanta 🙁

Yea, it's not such a sure thing that he is coming back anymore. If he doesn't the Mets will have to drop a ton of money on Zito or Schmidt if they want to make a run next year.
