Mixing USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices

Greetings all,

I have a question on mixing USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices. Will this result in all devices operating at the slower 1.1 speed? I plugged in a Verbatim USB 2.0 CDRW external drive and I got some "High Speed" problem in the windows XP notification near the system tray, alerting me this the cdrw is a 2.0 device but is working at the slower speed. The recording process was in fact very slow (I would estimate similar to ~4X speed burning). The drive was plugged in directly to the back (motherboard: epox 8rda+) but I do also have an external USB 2.0 D-Link hub.

So what can I do about this slowdown? If necessary, I could install a 2nd USB adapter, keeping all 1.1 devices and 2.0 devices on separate USB buses.

XP needs sp1 or better for USB 2.0 or I believe the device manufacturer's 2.0 drivers

Alright, but what about mixing devices?

not sure if mixing would cause a drop to lowest denominator..

still believe that is a software issue as I have a mouse, keyboard and a USB 1.1 hub on the mobo backplane USB 2.0 and the adjacent one to that works fine at USB 2.0 with a PacificDigital 2.0 former CDRW enclosure ..now holding a harddrive ..transfers fine..I see no "HighSpeed" error on my setup unless the drive is a new to the OS item being used. The last time on a new mobo install I saw your error..dl'ed sp1 for the WinXP Home(non-sp1) I was handed by the person I was doing the build for and my USB 2.0 harddrive was recognized..as always ..ymmv :)

Some hubs will default/only use the 1.1 when both are on it. Easiest way to fix it is to get another hub for the 2.0 devices.:disgust: There was an article about this on Tomshardware that explained it and that some hubs will do both. I don't remember what you had to look for in a hub. I decided that if I ever mixed 'em I'd get another hub.

AFAIK the 8rda+ has a extension plate for the USB 2.0 that plugs into the motherboard by wires. The ones on the back of the mobo are 1.1.

Cool. Although my 8RDA3+ (not 8RDA+, oops) came with only a FireWire back plate, not a USB. I would like to buy one but I cannot find a place that sells any.

BTW, the 8RDA3+ manual specifies the back usb ports as 2.0 ports.
