Mitsubishi Galant '97. yay or nay?? Update 5/13. All for 3500bucks!

I'm looking to buy it from my friend. The car is a 1997 model and everything is automatic. Now, I don't know much about cars here since I've never own one and she's willing to sell it for a round 4000 bucks. There is a slight dent at the rear she says and the mileage on the car is a whopping 107k. 🙁

I've heard that Japanese cars are pretty reliable in sense of high mileage, so how good is the deal that she's giving me? Other than the slight damage and the high mileage, everything is good. That's what she says. 🙂

I'm not looking for a car to rice around. I just need a decent car that will take me places. That's all. I would have gotten a ACura if I want performance. 🙂 Bare that in mind. 😀

LMK. help me out!!!!!!

Update!!

Alright, she gave me more details of the car. It's a Vr4 and she has just changed the timing belt and all the tires are still good. No CD player is included in the car but everything else is good. So, any other feedback? I might have her drive the car to my part of the town to let me check it out first hand but she's like 4 hours away from me. So, I jsut want to know if all these details given are enough to even have a thought of buying it for 4000.

Another Update!!! (5/8)

I've lost the though of buying the car but my dad gave me the green light to go ahead. So erm, I've been talking to her and she's willing to lower it down to 3500. She's doing this because she needs the money to pay for her debts and she's leaving the country, so, I see no harm done. Again, she says that everything is in good condition and even sent me a picture of the exterior. I'm going check the car soon and will let you guys know what's going on. She has changed the timing belt and changed the car battery. 🙂 108k miles are from highway driving so I guess it's pretty okay too. I feel bad if I haggle more because 3500 for a Galant is plenty much to ask for. 🙂 Do you think I should haggle somemore?? 😀

Here's a pic of the car!!

Latest!! (5/13)

Latest update. I've got a feel of the car. I drove it today and it was smooth. Hard to believe that it's already 100k++ on it. The transmission is perfect and the shifing is smooth. The alignment is off by abit but no biggie. Sped down the highway and the steering wheel is firm. The car was abit dirty but this can be cleaned. Some dents on the door(normal for cars I guess). The dent on the side was not that bad. Was told that it would take about 2-300 bucks to fix it.

There's a crack on the glass in the front mirror though. It's not big, can't feel the dent crack you run your fingers through it in the car. Cause of crack is from a rock I guess. How much is it to change the whole front mirror?? It's not a problem but of course, I'll want it change if it's cheap.

She's offering 3500 and won't go any lower now. What are the comments you guys can give?? 🙂

Check out this link: Dead Eclipse. It was on another thread a couple of days ago. Sounds like the Eclipse had some pretty serious issues that Mitsubishi never issued recalls on and the dealerships really give you the run around. Not to say that this speaks for all Mitsus but I'd recommend you check out some of the owner forums for the 97 Galant before plopping down your cash. Especially since it's through a friend, you don't want the relationship to go sour if you start having car problems...

If it's been properly maintained and you have a trusted mechanic check it out then I would go for it.

I paid the same for a 1994 Toyota Corolla, if I were offered a 97 Mitsu Galant instead I would have jumped at the opportunity.

Thanks Ross. I've heard bad thigns about the Eclipse but not sure if that goes the same to all the Line of Mitsubishi's cars.

I'll talk to her more about the car. Oh yeah, another friend told me that I would probably need to overhaul the engine if it gets above 140k miles?? Is that true???

Do some research first before talking to her any further and make sure to ask LOTS OF QUESTIONS!

Go to Edmunds.com ePinions.com and Cars.com spend some time scouring through their reviews and forums.

Erm, I don't think she knows what is this.
>>

Don't buy it if she doesn't even know something so simple. Maybe she doesn't know you need to change the oil too 🙂

Okie, I've bombarded her ICQ with loads of question. I'm just waiting for an answer. 😀

Thanks for the help guys. Wait for my update. 🙂

My family had that same car (I4 ES model) until our lease ended and we got the 2002 model. 🙂

It's a pretty nice car...relatively few problems engine/tranny-wise...the engine packs a lot of punch for just a 4-banger. (140-145hp) But in any case, have it checked out thoroughly by a trusted mechanic or a mitsu dealer...so both parties know the real condition of car at the time of purchase.

For $4K, I'd jump on it... 😛

$4000 sounds like a good price. could pay a mechanic like $50 to go check out the car to see if there are any real critical problems that might cost u later.

You're kidding, right?

Which part?? The cash part or whether does stuffing envelopes for 2 bucks work?? I might just try it out. Does not seem like MLM. 😀

i don't know if it works or not, but back in the day i saw an ad for this in a local newspaper. i called them up and basically, i gotta pay them to hook me up with some envelopes to stuff. then i get paid after i stuff envelopes. i didn't like the way that worked, so i never considered it. if u really need $$$, clean out ur closets and put everything up on FS/FT 😀

Tried looking in my closet. Nothing is worth more than 10 bucks. 🙁 Perhaps, if I cancel my trip back home this summer, I could save 1300 dollars. Hmmmmmm............

COmputer stuff in Asia is quite cheap?? I don't think so unless they permit selling of pirated stuffs here. 😀

Anybody else has any feedback on the Galant? I find it to be a really nice car to own after the Honda. Do I need to overhaul the enginer after 140k miles??? Feedback?? please?
