I was one of the first to hop on this deal when the order status showed "in stock, will ship in 24 to 48 hours" and my order is now "on order" after 2 weeks.

Everyone else is enjoying their new toys and I am still waiting for something that may never be shipped. This sucks!

Not happy with buy.com at all

Can anyone tell me if this camera works with iMovie2?

Or you can go to your local CompUSA and get a ATI DV Wonder for ... ehh, $9.99. Free Ulead VideoStudio 5.0 in the package. Check this thread.

I figured the Pyro Platinum SE firewire card for $67 from Amazon was worth the cost. Card is reasonable and bundled software gives a little bit of everything a novice movie maker might want to have. Or if you know you want to go big time from the start Pyro Platinum DV includes the full version w/manuals of Adobe Premiere 6.5 and can be had for around $250-280. Actually cheapest way to get Adobe Premiere. :)

Adobe Premiere 6.0 LE

The CDRW and the company have both given up the ghost but this software has been terrific for use creating sound effects CDs for my local community theatre.

Anyone know how to activate the 1.3MP mode? The max resolution is 1152x864 which is under 1 mp.. From past experience, I know there is huge jump in quality when going to 1280x1024. I can't believe Sharp would falsify its CCD resolution.

I think the 1.3M figure is gross pixels... effective pixels is a bit less than that, thus the 1152x864 resolution.

Why don't you buy it on EBay for $465 shipped?

i'm scurred... after that dude reporting his problem with the door on the memcard reader. i don't want to have to deal with the manufacturer if there's a problem. though i guess at that price i couldn't really complain too much. hrm. maybe i'll do it.

Carefull, that $465 deal says it will ship in 3 weeks? I would wait for buy.com to get more camcorders from sharp before going through those other dudes. Who knows... Maybe buy.com will get it sooner than that. But maybe not. This is killing me.

i went ahead and took a gamble on the 465 ebay deal. when i ordered it said there were 8 left, now it says it's closed. i remember it saying something about three weeks when i bid, but now it says "in stock and ready to ship."

anyway, when i bought it, i got an email sending me to the guy's website and he had me order it through there. unfortunately there was a "processing error" and i was instructed to contact them. i've sent a few emails, but haven't heard back yet. it's only been a few hours though, so who knows. i'll update later.

update: 12/14/02
seems like i'm getting the runaround from the seller. sahmomshop on ebay. apparently he's a she and she's very slow to respond to email and keeps having "problems" with my credit card. according to my credit card company she's full of it. buyer beware... we'll see if she actually delivers.

Whenever I have a dilemma like this, I look where the nearest service center is. If there is one within *driving distance* then I will consider it. If not.... the deal's off. I live in Atlanta, and just about every major electronics manufacturer has a service center here (most within 10 or 15 miles of my house).

p3numbra,

I also bought one today on EBay from the 465 free shipping seller. I must have bought it around same time you did. After I bought it I noticed they took the auction down. I emailed them and they emailed me right back, saying they had sold all the cameras. Anyway, I got my order in and hopefully they'll be shipping my camera out soon.

BTW, there's another EBay seller that has them for $465 as well and that's showing 13 available, for you guys that are still thinking of getting this camera.

So i take it, since no one who owns one of these has yet to find a HUGE Problem with the VL-AX1U that warrants the dramatic price drop?

Good to know.... i expect to receive mine on friday! =)

Got mine Monday. Looks pretty good. Tweaked all the settings and played with the still camera. Quality is OK for the camera, nothing spectacular - but I havent had chance to see it on PC yet.

Will test the video tonite.

Just picked one up from an Ebay seller from Florida for $469 with free shipping. I hope shipping is fast because I would like it for Christmas. He had over 100 good references and no bad. Wish me luck! And a question: Do you think the higher-count CCD will do anything for picture quality? Just wondering because I was going to pick up the Sharp with the 0 lux recording, but it only had a 460k pixel CCD, but the wife said go with this for $30 more (she's a "multimedia princess" and has business cards to prove it :)).

Anyone know how to turn OFF the automatic shutdown???
I need to record movie directly from this camera to my computer, without passing through the cassette. Everything works fine until 5 mins later, the camera will automatically shut down (something like power saver). After looking through the manual, I can not find any option about turning off the automatic shutdown function.

It is really painful to record everything on tape, and then transfer everything to computer, spending DOUBLE time.

Anyone have any idea?

On Sony cams you just don't put any tape in and the auto shoutdown is disabled.

Try it.
