That's what I get for being pokey - above prices look great. I just bought two.

Checking out the DV forums I see ;)

The mic attachments worries me only a little since:
a) this is my first camcorder
b) I'll be lucky if I somehow don't manage to get my thumb in the picture, much less worry about studio quality sound

There seem to be a number of places out there that sell the BT-L441 battery (and the BT-221, but why go with the lesser for only a few $ difference). Granted, they are "Sharp equivalent" but that doesn't really worry me much. The prices seem to be about $39 for the battery.

Here's what I found for shipping costs at the online stores so far (I tried 3 batteries to see if they charge 'per item' or per total weight) :

Supermediastore.com charged me about $8 for ground shipping (shipping address is Eastern PA)

batterymegasource.com charged me $12 for UPS ground or USPS Priority

And then of course there is Ebay . . .

I have not used any of these stores so do not know how reliable they are.

Hi jack, Here is what I really wrote
"There is a way to get a Sony TRV18 for $400 shipped ($600 - special dollars and rebate). I am going to post it as soon as mine ships...."

The deal is simple, and others have almost pointed it (in the amex price match reply) out..... There is currently a $100 rebate on the TRV line of cameras (TRV 240, 340, 740, 840, 18, 25, 27, IP5, IP7BT). MSN is currently running their msn rewards 20% back up to $100 program. One of the stores that they run it with is mpsuperstore.com. They have the TRV18 for $563. Shipping to Ga was $36.84. The total comes to $599 -$100 -$100 MSN rewards dollars= $400

The thing is that you must actually need to use your MSN dollars in Feb. For me, its a cinch that I will purchase something later on at their participating stores...(circuit city) so to me the MSN dollars are real dollars.


Now, here is the scoop on mpsuperstore: look at bizrate and you will see that everyone dings them for giving you a sales pitch. The trick to mpsuperstore is 1) expect that you will receive a message or call from them saying that you must call due to something with your order 2) be prepared to say "no i dont want a warranty" and "no i dont want accessories". As you can see from bizrate.. they actually do ship what they sell ... they just shippped mine 5 days after ordering and 3 days after saying "no". All in all it looks to be a good deal for a fine camera

Search google.com for mpsuperstore, not great reviews and many horror stories, but the deal is good.

How much trouble do you want to save $100.00. You can get within $100.00 of this deal at good vendors (aprox $500.00 delivered, after rebate).

I am really flip-flopping on this also because I want a TRV-18 (Good indoor video where I will use it most) I seriously considered a TRV-25/27, the outdoor video is outstanding, but the indoor video is lower quality.
(Not my assesment but those who know much more than I)

Decisions, Hummmmmmmmmmmmm

Just wonder is there anything like Hard Drive camcorder? I mean camcorder using hard drive? Hard drive is cheap, considering the fact that you can use them millions of times. And the best thing about hard drive I can think is RANDOM ACCESSABLITY, which means you can watch any moment on your HD without waiting.

I have this thought because it seems that with MiniDV camcorder you have to spend 60 min to transfer 60 mins of video to your computer.

I didn't see anything like a flash on that camcorder. And I didn't see the name "flash" mentioned on the manual.

Sure!

Check out the Firestore It's just like a DV deck but there's no tape. Hook it up to your DV camera and start recording.

Or the CitiDiskDV Same deal.

Depending on your setup, you can even just hook up your laptop to a camera and record that way. Same idea.

Word has it Sony is working on a tapeless camcorder using a 2 gig memory stick. Tapeless camcorders are not far off, although the price will be high for the initial releases.

(As usual, The bleeding edge is expensive)

Ikegami introduced the Editcam back in 1995 I believe. It's a hard-disk based camera. But the idea never really took off.

One question is, how many gigs of HD space (or flash memory) do you want to have sitting on your shelf? I've got about 50 MiniDV tapes that I'll never tape over. That's about 800 gig of HD space. I'm much more willing to leave the tapes on my shelf than to leave a terabyte of HD there.

A camera that burns straight to DVD would really be the way to go then :)

Now that DVD burning is possible and inexpensive, you'd just need a camera that did quality real-time hardware MPEG-2 encoding and could take the rigors of being jostled around while burning, and you'd be good to go.

But for now, your options are tape or HD, and tape is still cheaper at 13+ gig per $4 tape. And back in 1995 when the Editcam came out, there's no question that tape was the cost efficient way to go.

Yes. My TRV18 came in Thursday... sealed new box. the $100 rebate is in the mail and my MSN$$ are properly recorded.

The best place to buy tapes is Sam's Club or Costco. They are about half the price than Pest Buy or Circuit City.

I haven't used the trv18 but the trv27 does have bad indoor recording. My old sony ccdtrv32 vid8 has better indoor capture. I ended up returning my trv27..outdoor capture wasn't outstanding like you said either..I think I will save up for a 2000 vx :)

I have not used either cam, I am just going by what I find on DV forums. Although I don't think anyone would be seriously disappointed by the results of this $400.00 DV cam. Not that you could compare this against a $2000.00 3 chip cam. ;)

Indeed. What I'd really want would be a randomly accessable, non stretchable, inexpensive medium to capture to. At this point a recordable DVD storage system seems like it might be a viable possibility in the future, but even that would have to be dual layered and maybe even double sided. Unless I could record at least an hour of footage at a time, I think it'd be a PITA.

Well, I'm just gonna send my broken one back to Buy.com and buy one from the guy on EBay selling them for $470 shipped. It's actually a better deal for me than from Buy.com.

Has anyone gotten a chance to use the camera much? Are you guys liking it?

Well????????????? Took out of box, looking good. Have hidden
for X-mas, although need to charge batteries. I see why they don't
include the 1394 cable, THERE $ 29.95 FOR 6 FT.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good thing I got the Ainst (think thats the brand, DV software
with firewire card and cable a few weeks ago at compgeeks for $19.95,
now I'll have a reason to use it
