As usually you are right, Smoke.

/OT:
However we can follow the development of the term august a little further:

The name of the month august comes from the roman emperor Augustus, who got this honorary name when serving as the emperor in Rome (in latin "Imperator" = the person who has the right to give orders). Before that his name was Gaius Octavius (Octavius coming from the roman number eight, hence August became the eighth month).

Gaius Octavius was adopted into the family of Ceasar and became known as Gaius Caesar Octavianus. (A highly political adoption, to give him the possibility to obtain a high political position)

Gaius Caesar Octavianus was given "extraordinary powers" 44 BC, became "Imperator" 38 BC, and was honored with the name of Augustus 27 BC, when he laid down his extraordinary powers. Augustus in latin means "devinely elevated" and was given to him as the "invincible bringer of peace". He gave the power over Rome to the senate but held on to the control of the army (=Imperator) and the provinces. 2 BC he was called the father of the nation (pater patriae) and reigned unchallenged and mostly in peace (pax Augustae) and died in 14 AD.

Especially the last connotation I like: any august person or assembley should - if the word is used correctly and not as a cliche - work for and bring forth peace.
Isn't it ironic that the word august - "divinely elevated, invincible bringer of peace" is used so often to provoke and to bring dissent?
/end OT

Why thanks Networkman, it's nice to know I hold a venerable position of high rank. 😀

/me know what you meant, takes a swipe with his cane.... 😛

😀

🙂 Why the swipe with the cane - aren't you a "invincible bringer of peace"? :Q 😀

I didn't see the term "Older than dirt" used anywhere so I don't see what "august" has to do with smoke or Ray

Mondo,

I admit I have no idea what an August forum is....

Further, will tilt at whatever windmills happen my way if it is a tilting it needs.
You can ignore me, or you can join in, you can even paint a sign if you like,

but I thank Peter for his effort and I enjoyed hearing what my team mates felt about mini-teams.

If you run upon another posting unworthy of YOUR comment, please feel free to pass on by.

Comment or complain about the weather all you want to ... but until you can provide a constructive way to change the weather, you are basically only tilting at windmills and the effort is, basically, worthless.

Please note that the current state of the weather is immaterial to this discussion!

Ok ... For the record. I am neither for nor against mini-teams. Mini-Teams, multiple personality crunchers, and large scale crunchers are a fact of life.

What I really see out of this whole thread is a rehash of the old Kurt Vonnegut novel about the Chronosynclastic Infudibulum and such ("The Sirens of Titan") ... The concept of equality gone amuck. Within the context of that book:
[*]If the slowest processor crunching FaD for any user was a 200 MHz Pentium, all of us with processors faster than that would need to run an application that would waste the excess leaving exactly 200 MHz free to run FaD.
[*]If the user with the least number of computers had only 1 computer then each of us would be limited to just 1 computer.
[*]If the user with the least average hours per day only ran his/her computer for 2 hours a day, none of us could run FaD on our computers for more than 2 hours a day.

All in an effort to make everyone "equal" --- whatever that means.

I think you get it ... equality gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. No one can legislate , impose, or guarantee equality. In as much as the U.S. Constitution proclaims that all men are created equal ... that just isn't true. Some are more equal than others. There is no such thing as "equal" genetic makeup. What the constitution says, in essence, is that we should view and treat all others as equals irrespective of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, genetics, intelligence, morals (or lack thereof), economic status, etc ... and infinitum ad nauseum.

It is reasonably apparent to me that a significant part of this world find satisfaction only by making others be less. i.e. Sour Grapes. Ethnic slurs and Racial epithets are probably the best example of this practice of making others feel inferior so these immature individuals can feel superior even when it isn't necessarily so.

My recent concern (referenced in this thread) about adding another 600 or so computers was not asking permission but rather testing the waters to see if most of the folks were too immature to handle such good fortune for the project or if most of the folks understood that I can put out 10 points a day and feel just as good about myself as long as "I do the best I can with what I have". As long as I do that, I feel that I am the equal of everyone crunching on any project. As long as those on this team do that, they are, in my eyes, my equals.

Of course, there are those who are more equal than others ... such as Waitman, Smoke, Goeffs, Wolfsraider, Slatz ... et al ... that can enjoy and revel in the fact that I am more fortunate to be in a position to contribute at a higher level than others. I can assure you that I revel and enjoy the achievements of those folks more than I take pleasure in my own accomplishments. My greatest dream is to provide the incentive and support for others to surpass my achievements. For the teacher to become the pupil.

The measure of a human is not his/her accomplishments but rather how those accomplishments relate to that humans capabilities. In my viewpoint, those whose performance approaches or exceeds capability are truly the champioins.

Perhaps this will put my position in more perspective.

My viewpoint is:

Take two beers and call me in the morning.!

make 'em big beers if you are so inclined.

I like mini-teams. Always have. Large, diverse teams of any kind have smaller teams inside them. TA is very diverse and very large.

Keep in mind that I have never been a member of a mini-team, either.

did I mention having a beer?

Ex-member just recalling his favorite times on Anandtech.

The Possessed Red System morphed into TWTA (Team Within Team Anandtech) during the RC5-64 project. That was highly fun and quite interesting as smaller working members joined to make a larger unit. I thought everything was in fun, and it seemed to be for a long time.

Part of the reason why I finally left had to deal with the politics in this forum and other members feeling they could enforce self made rules on how you should act or how you should crack. While I no longer hold grudges, it still hurt when I was told not to particpate in an event as my herd would skew results.

The point of this is not a sob story, but it is this: Keep everything light, keep everything fun. When things are no longer fun, it ceases being a hobby and starts being a job. Miniteams are not for everyone, some people like to be part of one, others don't. Some people like races, others don't. Some people like the butter on their bread on the top and some like it under (Dr. Suess). Why outlaw something that a significant portion (everyone is a significant portion of the TeAm) enjoy. You (the forum members) took it away from me and I had no recourse left but to leave. Please don't make the mistake again and force others away.

Eric you would be most welcome in the Rebel Alliance. I think you would like our two rules
1 Crunch what you want
and
2 Have fun doing it.

Exactly!!!!!! 😉

Hmm, I do not think that many of the posters disagree with the above posted thoughts... and it is good to repeat the message a few times ... 😉

Err excuse me! ,no I didn't & I bet the vast majority of TA didn't either (I don't recall the story, remind me via PM if you wish).
I & most TA members would welcome any extra firepower & wouldn't really care if it knocked us down a spot 😉
If the story is as straightforward(?) as you've mentioned then I (& most likely most in this thread at least) would of stood up for you (assuming we were about of course).

If you re-read this thread carefully you will see that it isn't an anti-mini team thread as you appear to think it is ,in fact it is showing that there is overwhelming support for them! 🙂

I am sorry that you left TA but please don't make sweeping generalisations.
If it transpires that I argued with you then I can asure you at least that I wasn't complaining because of your crunching power ,I would only welcome that 🙂
Btw it is correct that their are rules for how to behave in the forums (they are part of the AT forum rules too remember) ,otherwise it would be anarchy wouldn't it?.

Didn't you have a rather firey temper? ,wasn't that part of it? 😉 (my memory is stirring very slightly ,of course it could be wrong & I'm thinking of someone else 😉)
I don't want to re-open any old wounds but I felt I should make a few things clear.

I hope your happy in your new team & projects 🙂 ,what are you crunching these days?
All the best

Yep 😀

It has been brought to my attention, that one contributing factor to the sometimes less than cordial discussion may be the not too well chosen title of this thread.

"How do we want it?"

The one reader who by PM asked me about this indicated, that this title may imply that this would indeed be a policy making discussion. That is a misunderstanding - because I never intended that - I wanted to make a catchy title and did not get the subtle (?) or not-so-subtle undertones right. For this mistake I ask for your forgiveness.

The subtitle " ... pro or con?" also indicates a more aggressive or "black or white" mentality, which was not intended.

I have changed the title to a more neutral one and I hope, that it will not provoke as much as the old title did.

The only explanation for this is that I am not a native English speaking person and that it is quite hard for me to get all the implications in the words right. I have no problem with that is Swedish. 😀

If anybody has been prevented to post, or has been unhappy ore offended or turned off by the not-intended implications, please let it be known, that no offence or aggressive tone or negative implication was intended.

ah, PF. I remember when TWTA was at its peak. Formidable. Could even stay ahead of my herd. Couldn't compete with the likes of Mander, but who could. 🙂

That was back when we spent many evenings fragging each other in UT (I was mostly a fraggee, not a fragger). I didn't get involved with the mini team discussion back then because I didn't really care. I was around before most of the people who had strong opinions joined up and I'm still around after most of them faded away. Age and beer have a way of easing the conflicts. Anyway, Eric/PF, I hope you are doing well and perhaps we can hear from you more often.

ps, I looked at archived forums entries. It is almost 4 years since PF left. That's a long time. I don't remember exactly when I started crunching for TA, but my first cruncher was an FIC PA-2007 motherboard with a Cyrix processor/room heater.

For as long as I've been here, it has seemed that those two rules are the only two that appear here. The only exception to that that I noticed was the one member who requested you not crunch as a miniteam. From what I've seen, most of Team Anandtech doesn't care what you crunch as long as you do crunch and have fun crunching. It seems to me that this whole issue has been blown out of proportion, because if I am remembering correctly (and I might have missed something) the only recent incidents involving anti-miniteam sentiments has come from one or two members who were not supported by the rest of the team in their beliefs. I have not seen an example of anyone insisting that someone crunch a certain project an no others, so I can't comment on that, but it seems that, as I said before, most people here do not care what you crunch as long as you do crunch.

Maybe I'm just missing something, but thats who everything appears to me.
