Why do people hate Walmart? Maybe they were fired? Maybe they were passed over when they applied for a position? Maybe their store was uncompetitive and got ran out of business?

Because people get mad when a more successful company comes into town and drives out the competition. Because, in rare instances, people like to PAY MORE for the same thing.

I dont give a damn if it comes from the local grocer, Wal Mart or a guy handing it to me out of the back of the truck. Long as the quality is the same I'll buy it where its the cheapest.

Generally the argument is "they run the mom & pop shops out of town". Of course, these same people refuse to understand that Walmart hires hundreds of people, allows "mom & pops" in some circumstances to sell their goods through the store, offers benefits that mom & pops usually don't, have higher wages than mom & pops, the opportunity to "climb the ladder" and generally provide a greater selection and better price for customers.

You just failed at the game of capitolism and democracy, way to go! Why don't you get out of the US since you dislike the foundation of the country so much?

This has absolutely nothing to do with democracy at all, and pure capitalism is not particularly great for individuals. If you allow companies to do absolutely whatever they want in the name of profit, it does no benefit to anyone but the owners of said companies. If we were a country based on pure capitalism, there would be no child labor laws, nor minimum wage, nor restrictions on advertising cigarettes to children, nor truth in advertising laws.

Most of those can be blamed on those damned liberals, can't they? 😛

no one said anything about pure capitalism, but when you have towns voting against companies from coming in and opening shop, you have the anti-thesis of capitalism and it reeks of fascism.

You guys have absolutely no problem supporting a company that treats it's employees like crap and destroys smaller businesses to save a few cents, do you?

Walmart sucks.
But, isn't that just capitalism at it's finest?
No, it's not, because as the thread topic points out, Wal-Mart frequently does not have the lowest prices. And when they do, it's usually because the item is of the lowest quality (once again resulting in poor value).

First, pure capitalism doesn't exist. It's also nowhere NEAR what walmart does. Walmart doesn't employ child labor, ignore min. wage, etc. So, lets ground this discussion in reality, fair enough?

Second, capitalism and democracy(republics) go hand in hand. Name one successful democracy that wasn't founded on capitalism.

Next, doing legal things in the name of profit is the impetus for all business, otherwise, they wouldn't find investors. Furthermore, publicly traded companies have a fiduciary RESPONSIBILITY to thier investors to do just that, make legal profit, as much as possible.

Finally, by supporting local mom-pop stores instead of letting the market makes it's decision, you are being anti-competitive, or socialism/facism leaning.

Let the market make that decision...

Something I have noticed that WalMart does is offer bulk items at a more expensive price than the non-bulk items.

example: 12 pack of toilet paper is more expensive than 3 four packs.

I think it is tricky marketing because people always assume bulk packs are the better buy.

yeap. Go check out Sams club. Same thing there.

About half i would guess are more epxensive. You have to look at price per oz/item/etc. It really amazes me that they get the amount of business they do.

I love wal-mart. i can get EVERYTHING i need. quality worse? pfft it comes from the same darn factory. Granted some of the off brand name crap is well crap.

Well, it's all about economics notfred. People will most always buy product x at the lowest price to them. If only small businesses could be more competitive...

And honestly, why would care how Walmart treats their employees? I never see my local store undermanned.

you're dumb. sorry to break it to you.

If you weren't, you'd know that buying things at walmart cost you just as much as buying at a union grocery store.

After you factor in the taxes you pay to help cover all the public services the "working poor" employees, the lost money in your local economy (walmart sends all the profits back to the headquarters, unlike local-owned businesses that generally recycle the money into the local economy), and the public tax breaks that walmart usually gets to move into a community (because of short-sighted local gov't boards), walmart is no bargain at all.

don't feel bad though. The billions that walmart makes shows how many other dumb people are out there. at least you're not alone. 😛

read here and see the light

I buy the Horizons milk 1/2-gallon cartons. It is ~ 3.49 at Kroger, ~3.79 at the local grocery, and ~2.49 at WalMart. Only Kroger carries the 1%, but I still favor Walmart because that's $2/gallon difference.

Last time I checked those mom and pop stores didn't offer the wonderful loving healthcare and union benefits that walmart has.

you're really, really dumb, or very smart and full of ironic wit.

walmart offers healthcare, but it's about $200 a month. as a result, the bulk of their employees who make less than $10 an hour can't afford it, so YOU pay for their public healthcare with your taxes. Woo hoo!

and walmart is the most anti-union company on the face of the earth (well, next to mcdonalds).

the amount of jobs lost in a walmart community usually outnumbers the crappy low-wage jobs it creates.
