Military Question

I'm currently 21 and no longer have the funds to continue college. I was thinking about joining some military. I've been looking into Coast Guard and from what I'm told it seems like a pretty good deal. My largest concern is being sent over seas. I'm told the CG has little chance of that. What does everyone recommend as far as military goes? Anyone in the coast guard? How did you like it?

Me = Navy. Never messed with Coasties too much... Although they did give me a part for a gyro that I needed one time, which was pretty cool, so I have no bones with em.

going to school on GI Bill and Army College Fund myself

from what I know the coast guard is in Iraq. Personally I loved it overseas. New people, new cultures, new foods. I've been deployed on real world missions a few times and made my peace with my maker that I may come home in a box. it's part of being in the military.

Ask as many people as you know who are currently in for their real-life experiences.

So let me get this straight, you want the money and benefits of the Military and the GI Bill without actually having to serve or earn said benefits? Is that about right? Sounds like it to me. The Military is for real men, not whiney little kids afraid to fight. Get a loan, get a job, or do without finishing college because the Military is much better off without a coward like you. You sound like the kind of person that would get the guy next to you killed so don't insult the fine men and women who serve by trying to use the Military as your college payment plan.

If you were to join the military this is the type of pressure you would be under to go overseas. Now this is just one person on the internet, wait until your buddies from Basic are feeding you this rhetoric.

Join the Marine Corps, more action, less money, not as much high speed equip. to play with like the Army, but the brotherhood is unlike any other.

Rhetoric my ass. He wants easy money, not to serve. My son-in-law is in the Military and just got back from Afgahnistan and will be going to Irag and I wouldn't want him to have to waste his time protecting someone like this as he has enough on his plate to keep himself alive and his buddies that do want to do their job. The Military does not need pansies who do not want to fight. They get people killed.

I kinda agree, kinda not. No one wants to go over there, be in a war, nor be in harms way. And a lot of people are in the military to pay for college, or atleast go to college afterwards. And just because the CG most likely won't get stationed overseas, it isn't going to be easy, and FooKilla needs to understand that. And he isn't going to be able to spend all of his time at home, and the CG do get underway, a lot. And especially now, they are stressing very much, due to the fact that they are now part of Homeland Security, and are having to do so much more with less funds and all.

IIRC the Coast Guard was in the Gulf of Tonkin during Viet Nam, patrolled the waterways during Desert Storm and I am guessing that they have a presence somewhere in the Middle East at this very moment.

Why don't you want to go overseas? You are 21 years old and it is time to experience something other than mommy's milk.

I have to agree with Ronstang, though, it sounds like you want an easy ride for the same benefits that other have to place their lives on the line for. You probably would not do well in the military.

Just because I don't want to be on the front line I shouldn't join the military because I'm a "pansy"? Where the hell do you come off judging someone you don't even know. I'm not looking for easy money I'm looking for a learning experience and skills to help me with my future. My major in college was computers and if I join the military thats what I would definately want to work with. I would appreciate you stop trolling my thread and go find something better to do buddy because I could care less what you think.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you did say this:

My largest concern is being sent over seas.

...

Overseas service != front line combat. If you don't want input, don't post on ATOT. You're going to get all sides.

I want feedback however when someone goes out of their way to try to personally insult me, especially someone I dont even know, it pisses me off. I wouldnt mind being sent over fixing machines, and equipment.. I think my definition of front-line is different than yours.

Yes Ronstang, the military is full of hard core rambos who don't go a day without seeing combat... BULLSH!T.

But I don't like to be the person making the arguments, I'll let the US Army do that for me.

Brief List of US Army Jobs
APACHE Attack Helicopter Systems Repairer (94K)
Signals Intelligence Analyst (98C)
Signals Intelligence Analyst (98C)
Human Intelligence Collector (97E)
Psychological Operations Specialist (37F)
Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator/Maintainer (14J)
Special Forces Communications Sergeant (18E)
Man Portable Air Defense System Crewmember (14M)
PATRIOT Fire Control Enhanced Operator/Maintainer (14E)
PATRIOT Launching Station Enhanced Operator/Maintainer (14T)
Tactical Automated Fire Control Systems Specialist (13C)
Cable Systems Installer/Maintainer (25L)
Computer/Automation Systems Repair (35J)
Military Intelligence (MI) Systems Maintainer/Integrator (33W)
Microwave Systems Operator/Maintainer (25P)
Multi-channel Transmission Systems Operator/Maintainer (25Q)
Network Switching Systems Operator/Maintainer (25F)
Radio Operator/Maintainer (25C)
Radio/Communications Security Repairer (94E)
Satellite/Microwave Systems Chief (25T)
Special Electronic Devices Repairer (94F)
Telecommunications Operations Chief (25W)
Telecommunication Operator/Maintainer (25D)
Test Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Maintenance Support Specialist (94H)
Interior Electrician (21R)

What do these all have in common? NONE OF THEM INVOLVE FRONT LINE COMBAT. How fvcking old are you to think that being in the military means the person is shooting a machine gun from a foxhole?

I'm sure that the army doesn't need technicians...

Turns out they do!

Oh and calling people cowards, just stfu. You don't even know the OP. Come to think of it, I don't know you. I bet you're a fat, balding ex-army recruit just waiting for retirement so you can live off a government check. Assumptions are a bitch aren't they?

So, first you definitely don't want to go overseas, now you wouldn't mind it......😕 Your thread title should be changed to "Need money for college, want very easy job in military that would put me in no danger, but still get me lots and lots of $$$$$"
