Now sure the GI bill will pay for his 4 years but he will be almost middle aged when he finishes, and starts his career. Time is one thing you cannot buy back and let me tell you that starting college as a wet-behind-the-ears 18-19yr old is a BIG difference than starting as a 24yr old in terms of the people you will meet and the experiences you will have.

There's not a single path of life everyone must follow. Starting college later is a better idea anyway because you're more likely to learn than drink and do stupid crap all day and night.

This stuff about guys who join the military mainly to be able to go to college being cowards and unpatriotic is ridiculous. Hardly anyone who joins the military "wants" to go to war, but they know it's a possibility, if not a probability, and they're willing and able to do their duty when called upon. I don't know if that fits the originator of the thread, but you're insulting a large number of members of the military by making those comments.

I live in a small rural town and a lot of guys over the years have joined the military in order to get a college degree. The ones who served in mainly peacetime were able to serve and get their degrees within 4-6 years of graduating high school, but it's going to take many of the ones serving now much longer to complete their degrees.

Several who graduated high school in the last couple of years joined the local National Guard and had started college, but were then deployed to Iraq. They weren't looking forward to going, but they did and they served well and honorably. They weren't cowards and nobody had to worry about his back because he was in a unit full of guys who joined up mainly to go to college. They were sent in February of 2004 and all who were in that particular unit returned last December. Most have returned to college and they know their education may be interrupted again because they may have to go back to Iraq, but they're not "bitching and whining" about it. They're getting the job done here at home and in Iraq and they deserve the same respect you'd give anyone in the regular military.

So let me get this straight, you want the money and benefits of the Military and the GI Bill without actually having to serve or earn said benefits? Is that about right? Sounds like it to me. The Military is for real men, not whiney little kids afraid to fight. Get a loan, get a job, or do without finishing college because the Military is much better off without a coward like you. You sound like the kind of person that would get the guy next to you killed so don't insult the fine men and women who serve by trying to use the Military as your college payment plan.

Look buddy, I understand your patriotic feeling , but if you weren't ALL TALK you wouldn't be here on AT bashing some people that don't beleive in the concept of war , you would be somewhere on the frontline in Iraq fighting for what you beleive is right.

He's not the one trying to get free money out of the deal, is he?

Nice edit for the strawman...

It was edited 4 minutes before any replies were posted. WTH is the strawman?

Yah thats what someone would rationalize, but part of the college experience is to do all that "stupid crap" and learn the consiquences of your actions. Let me add (hopefully not steriotyping too much but this is my experience) that the military men that I know are some of the hardest drinkers and do all kinds of stupid crap usually involving fighting (and usually get away with it since the cops by my school are all practicly ex-Marines or Army). So it is my opnion that you are just as likey to do that sort of "crap" the only difference being that by 24 you should know better.

QFFT. I'm a 29 year old sophmore, got a problem with that? ;)

Personally, I've found most of my college classes to date to be contrived and easy. Granted, I'm not trying to be an engineer or anything, but I haven't been impressed with the experience. I can see through most of the bull$hit though having worked in corporate America for 10 years now in some type of management (yes, I was in Sales management at 19 years old without a college degree).

I'm currently 21 and no longer have the funds to continue college. I was thinking about joining some military. I've been looking into Coast Guard and from what I'm told it seems like a pretty good deal. My largest concern is being sent over seas. I'm told the CG has little chance of that. What does everyone recommend as far as military goes? Anyone in the coast guard? How did you like it?

going to school on GI Bill and Army College Fund myself

from what I know the coast guard is in Iraq. Personally I loved it overseas. New people, new cultures, new foods. I've been deployed on real world missions a few times and made my peace with my maker that I may come home in a box. it's part of being in the military.
